Dealer est. for 08 IS 250 F/R brake job

My friend has a 2008 Lexus IS 250. Here's the estimate for replacing pads and rotors on her car.

Those are some awfully expensive shims.

And how many miles on the car to require new rotors?

So, is she going ahead with the dealer work or will she have it done elswhere? That car should be about out of warranty.

I think many of the people who buy cars like that are frightened by the dealer telling them the work really needs to be done by them - so they pay it.

Of course the dealers are especially good at saying: "These are your brakes we're talking about here Miss".

Shaun,

Sounds like you need to man up and do it for parts costs plus "service natural".

Hmmm, are the shims not included with the brake pads? Is the fitting kit a disposable kit that helps align the brakes to the rotors? 1/2 can brake cleaner per assembly? 1 hour of tech labour per assembly?

There has to be an independant shop around! Heck, aren't Click and Clack in your "fair city"?

Pads front and rear: ~$60.00 (include shims)
Rotors, all four: ~$160.00
New guide pins (fitting kit?????): ~$12.00 per wheel

So $480 for labor (sounds high in the hours category and I am assuming one hour per wheel) and about $270.00 in parts for only $1400.00 and slight change. Sounds good to me.

$160 in shims and fitting kits???

My dealer costs:

Front brake pads, cheapest Bendix $19/pr, most expensive Bosch ceramic $51/pr (both include shim kit)

Front rotors $42 each

Rear brake pads, cheapest Bendix #22/pr, most expensive Bosch ceramic $59/pr (both include shim kit)

Rear rotors $36 each

If you needed caliper pins, bolts, bushings etc they're available for $13 an axle, so $26 for the car

Under $100 in total labor

It looks like the shim\springs that hold the pads in position.

This is why people dump luxury cars when they are no longer under warranty, or when the miles start to get high. It's highway robbery, but par for the course.

Why anyone pays the dealership as opposed to a quality independent is a mystery to me.

Here's what I have ordering from BMA. Unfortunately, Pelican doesn't do Lexus. I would do the work for her for dinner, I can't imagine it will take more than 2 hours for both ends. She was ready to have the dealer do it, had no idea how much it should cost.

My business partner has reached the point of brake service on his Nissan GTR. It's $7000 for pads & rotors.

Wow, personally I've never replaced the shims if the new pads did not include them and I've never replaced the "fitting kit".

~$160 for some pieces of tin?

Criminal.

I hesitate to mention BMA on these threads because there is some overlap with Pelican on what they sell/catalogue, but they are my good friends and I do mega business with them. But Brembo front discs for $38 each is about what I would have guessed. Parts are reallyreally cheap right now in this global economy.

FWIW, you could step up a little and get her non-Chinese rear rotors and F/R pads for probably a few bucks more. They'll probably work OK but not give her the same pedal she's been accustomed to. OP parts is *straight outta China*.

BMA and AutohouseAZ are both excellent sources of parts that Pelican doesn't sell. Pelican gets all of my Porsche money.

Yes, I was pretty shocked by this, but hey, that's capitalism I guess.

Thanks Denis for the info on OP, I'll change it up and also go to Meyle semi-metallics.

note there's no branding on my screen shot. if Wayne sold Lexus, he'd get my $, and certainly does all of my Porsche $.

If Wayne sold Mazda I'd be buying brake pads and rotors from him soon.

a confession from me, there's a good chance I will be bent over later next week. I'm taking my E320 wagon into a high end Mercedes independent next week. So far I've replaced/checked:

transmission output: no play
transmission mount: new
drive shaft donuts: new
drive shaft u-joints: OK, no play
drive shaft carrier bearing: new (old one replaced last weekend was nearly non-existent)
differential: used 80K unit
differential mount bushings: new
axles: new

I still have a clunk and secondary clank (metallic) when first going from P to R or D. In fact with all the work I've done, it's gotten a little worse, so clearly the old carrier bearing was soaking up some shock in the system. There is some rotational play in the diff input flange: you can turn it 5-10 degrees before the axle flanges engage, but having it over at this shop the other day on a lift, their 124 guy pronounced that normal.

oddly enough, the car drives beautifully under all other conditions. It's only going into a gear that is causing the 2-part noise.

Dropping it off on Tuesday. Will spend an hour or two under the car this weekend, but my gut says it's going to be very expensive to diagnose and repair.

Hopefully your good karma from helping the friend save money will repay at the Merc dealer.
