Landed it! (Skydive landing without a chute!)

Well, this guy finally did it, although with a wingsuit designed to slow him down to a 15 mph vertical (and a 50mph horizontal) speed.

Linky

Not bad.

Hmmm.... I'm not too keen on calling it a landing when he crashed into 24,000 boxes.

Quite impressive. He probably could have even landed on water using surface effect, without the boxes.
A flaring device/flaps would have helped even more.
Water skiers do that all the time with a few skips, but it ain't pretty.

That's ballsy. The "Point of no return" is somewhere around the time he stepped out of the plane.

He'd be more famous if he did it w/o the boxes.

You could NOT do that onto water falling at 15 feet/second and with a forward speed of 73 feet/second without at least injury.

Brave, but all the grace of a wet sock. Without boxes would be the trick.

crazy stuff.

That's still a whole lot faster than I want to be going when I "land".

Quote:
Connery is an experienced stuntman, having performed nearly 900 sky dives and 450 base jumps. He has been working on designing a parachute-free landing for years.

Technically, his flight wasn't a complete free fall, as he did wear a special wing suit, similar to those worn by other base jumpers, which slowed down his descent and helped him navigate his landing. The Telegraph reports the suit brought his gliding speed down to 50mph and his vertical falling speed down to 15mph.

I'd bet that line of boxes look small indeed from 2400'. The way his suit kept spilling air and rocking left and right was probably a little unnerving on final approach.

Some men and women spend time finding cures for disease. This guy is looking for a cure for being alive and not crippled. I'm sure he will succeed.

Stunt men jump into boxes every day. They score each side of each box first. But I wouldn't do it.
