Turning wood to stone

As Tabs says, Folk Art.
OK, I have almost completed my first stone carving, did another gecko, this time in Canadian Chlorite stone. It weighs about 85 lbs. I started a class on Saturdays in Laguna Canyon for stone sculpture. I thought this was done, ready to polish the last two Saturdays, three instructors, the first one said, done, polish it, the second one said the same thing, for the second Saturday in a row the third guy pulled out his red pencil and marked it up. The people are phenomenal so I pulled out the files and sandpaper and worked more. Maybe next week I can polish it. Right now it is a little shinny from sandpaper. Mostly hand chiseled, some dremel under the legs. I have been working on it the last 9 Saturdays, I am ready to move on. I want it done.

Dean I think that looks great, The one instructor is pushing you toward excellence :-)

What is the textured surface the lizard is standing on?

Nice job.

Cheers Richard

Thank you, and everyone.
I tried that with some different nail punches and ended up using a dental pick I broke prying something on a car. Must be a thousand little hammer hits there. Once I polish the gecko I will have to go over that to freshen it up.

Not sure, it's about 20" long, 12" wide and 10" tall, weighs 85lbs. I will check at work tomorrow, plus packaging it could weigh more.
I saw a Lexus in town yesterday from Texas with a "Who is John Galt" license frame, couldn't get my camera out quick enough.

You don't have to do that. It looks great and you should find a place at the house for it. BUT...

That's beautiful. Wish I had some artistic talent of any kind. No such luck though.

Very nice. I could never do that. How did you come to get involved in that? Back East in the woods, all they do is chainsaw art, bears, bears and bear cubs!

Can I order a golden retriever?
