Bacon Shortage Coming? Oh, the horror . . .

"A world shortage of pork and bacon next year is now unavoidable, says Britain's National Pig Association . . . New data shows the European Union pig herd is declining at a significant rate, and this is a trend that is being mirrored around the world. Pig farmers have been plunged into loss by high pig-feed costs, caused by the global failure of maize and soya harvests."

Feed them like they used to with food scraps instead of tossing them in the landfills.

Same thing with Beef. The water and food shortage has caused farmers to slaughter their cattle early to get some money out of them before the coming winter, during which they could not feed, so beef this winter will go up substancially...

Buy some now and freeze it... I have.

Modern science has come to the rescue. We now have genuine artificial tofu soybean free-range low-cholesterol simulated meat products. You'll find them in the prepack frozen foods section, but they're expensive and exclusive and they're not for everybody...

A lot of the veggie/soy stuff is quite good actually. I have it often (vegetarian over 25 years and counting). To each their own, but I find it a good alternative.

Yep, same here. One of my favorite easy meals is bangers & mash (links and mashed potatoes) with veggie brown gravy, using the Morningstar breakfast links. After all these years, people can tell I'm a veg-head because certain body parts look like certain vegetables...

Hydrorocket - I'm having a terrific heart attack just looking at that!

Hogs and when growing up.
In his youth my Pop was a farmer. So it was in his later years and during one of his surprise birthday party some old farmer buds came in the living room with a wooden box with holes. Out he pulls a piglet sporting diapers and duct tape. The thing looked like it was in shock, houseful of laughs and Mom wasn't too happy. Pop decides to keep it and in the short term raised it in the basement until we could get him a pen set-up in a shed. We fed that thing everything, the best leftovers, beer, you name it. Got him up to 280 lbs. and was ready for the butcher. The thing was normally timid but when his fateful day came, it seemed to know and went nutzo! I recall how massive he was hanging next to the normal 'lightweight' dark hogs while we watched. Bit grizzly here but fast forward... damn good tasting pork that fed our family for quite awhile. Thinking now it might not be a bad thing to do these days.

Producers are being payed the lowest prices in ten years, yet the price at the stores hasn't come down at all. I wonder who is pocketing all the money?

I think we all know the answer to that Bruce, but if I say who is to blame, this thread goes straight to the dungeon.

Hitler hated Jews, pork is taboo to Jews, you can do the math

No way am I having tofu, lettuce and tomato sandwiches next summer. Maybe I can get my sister to get some pigs instead of horses...

No way.

Still -the question is unanswered.

What do you mean by producers? They are about to become much lower volume, there is a temporary influx of stock, but then they will be making money off of a much lower volume in future. I'm not sure what you are talking about?

My in-laws buy several entire cows each year and have them butchered. We get lots of free meat. In-laws are good for something.
