Stuck rings -What to do?
I am working on a 1967 Wisconsin 4 cylinder engine. I think one cylinder's rings are stuck. 0 compression, put a little oil in the cylinder and it jumped up to 30 PSI immediately.
What should I use to try and free them up? ATF? Marel Mystery Oil? Ideas...Let's hear them Thanks... |

Take it apart and fix it if you want it to run right. Phosphoric acid will dissolve the rust, then oil might work.

Are you going to pour it in and let it sit?
Some old timers like wintergreen oil / methyl salicylate. Some people say a 50/50 mix of ATF and acetone.

I have been using Marvel with good results. Plus, it's inexpensive if it does or does not work. Have to rotate engine and such . . .

Soak with ATF . I've loosened up frozen boat engines many times.

atf or seafoam. Soak over night a couple of times. I've done this to several Wisc. with great success.

I successfully un-rusted a once-hydrolocked inboard/outboard using PB Blaster & about 3 applications over 3 weeks. Oh, & a strong battery

I don't care what type of success you guys have had . . . Marvel smells better. So there's something to be said for that.

Unless I'm tuning, my nose is nowhere near my tail pipe.

Thanks for the replies. I soaked it in ATF last night, I'll check it Sunday and see if it's any better.
Someone said to rebuild it. I probably will and I would just tear it down instead of trying to free the rings but it is going to be a MAJOR PITA to get it out of the vehicle it's in |
