Anyone here pull the plug? On your TV

My name is Scott... and I'm a TVaholic...

I know many of you have dumped the old boob tube...

It makes perfect sense to me... there are so many better way to spend my time... reading, hobbies, exercise, etc.

I'm on dish network... around $40 a month... 150 channels... and many a night I can't find anything to watch!

But... I CAN'T BRING MYSELF TO DO IT!

It is like heroin, get home, make dinner, TV on, brain on hold...

Someone plan an intervention! PLEASE!

Been there done that, got over it and I prefer life with TV.

I gave my TV to my grandmother back in the days before cable TV. I went for 3 years without a TV in my house. Now with a DVR and cable I can be picky about what I watch. I can record the show that interest me and zip right through the commercials.

For Oklahoma just the weather coverage is enough of a reason to have a TV. I love F1 and to watch the F1 race in full HD with surround sound system on a 60 inch tv is worth a lot to me.

I have Internet, but no cable TV. No dish, no converter box no nuthin'. No channels.

One of the best decisions I have ever made. I use the extra time to pursue an activity I call "doing stuff." I'm growing a vegetable garden this year. I read books. Entertain friends (I like to cook). Stroll through the neighborhood. Play my guitar. Organize my things. Paint angels. I hope to go backpacking next week.

I get movies from the library, for those times when someone is visiting and we want to watch a movie. Eventually, I plan to get a converter box so that I can get morning traffic/weather reports and PBS-type stuff.

Watching TV is stressful. "They" do this deliberately. Programming, particularly commercials, is high-intensity. In your face. The "stimulation" knob is turned to 11. I particularly found that watching TV just before going to bed can lead to insomnia. Not watching TV before bedtime can result in relaxation, calmness and good sleep.

As a matter of fact, I crave silence. I NEED periods of silence. Plenty of it, in fact.

I watched the Indy 500 at a local pub. Had some nice fish tacos. Wearing my pajamas.

I have a TV that is Wi-Fi capable and I watch Netflix movies and instant watch through it. No local channels, and typically the TV will stay turned off for days in a row. I find that I spend more time organizing the house, or tinkering in the garage, or generally doing things I like to do if I don't have TV to just sit down and entertain me.

I do still like to watch a movie or a History Channel show once in a while though, so I cannot see myself completely dumping the TV altogether.

I am watching less tv but do like History channel , survivor, Madmen, bus. channel. I like going online more and seeing what you folks have to say. We don't spend too much on holidays so can justify tv for the wife and I. Computer uses less electricity than a tv. Can't cut the chord yet on the tv. Winters are the worst here because you can't do much outside except bundle up and go for a walk.

OK, step 1 could be just plugging an antenna into the set and see what you can get for free.

That's what we do, and it's enough TV for us....and it only takes a minute to surf through all the channels.

I say cut the cable and keep the money!

I cannot even imagine wasting your life watching TV. Good Lord man, what if your ticker goes while you're watching the Tube and you keel over, dead? Is that the way you want to go? I know everyone has their thing, but I just can't imagine anything worse than watching that crap!

I drank the koolaide.

The only standard TV channel I watch is the news. The rest of my watching is the Science channel, Discovery, History, Speed TV, and Sci-Fi, Velocity, and BBS America channels. And 99% of that is recorded to the DVR, and watched on my schedule and no commercials. Without my DVR I would not watch much TV at all.

Have been TV free for over 10 years. Don't miss it. It is a lot of garbage. We backfill with surfing the net (on interactive sites like this one) and an Amazon prime membership for a movie or TV show every couple of weeks.

With the kids we play games, go outside, read etc. No fighting to get them off the box. Also no video game platform!

I gave it up in '76. Perhaps I had a little sense even in my 20's.

I love TV, got me a big ol' flat screen and a DVR in my den that that I love. Got me a small flat screen in the bedroom.

I am an early riser (0530), so is my wife. I get up and make coffee, come back up and watch Sports Center for a half hour, watch the weather then hit the news.

At 0615 or so I hit the stationary bike in the basement for 30 minutes then walk/jog for another 30 minutes.

When I get home from work I may watch TV, may not, depends.

TV is a tool I won't not have, sorry. Just learn to control it. When my kids were in school TV was not allowed during the week, no exceptions - for them, not me.

I'm in So Cal... don't need the weather

This started as a money saving measure (dumping Dish) however if I want to stream video to my big screen I would have to get high speed Internet so on the money we would just break even.

I agree most main stream TV is not worth watching... I'm more into documentaries and science type programing.

I do find after a couple glasses of wine I can get sucked into watching bad network TV.

My daughter used to get up at 7ish(around age 4> and she would go and watch tv so she gave her parents a break(especially when I was working out of town). It was a great babysitter. She is now in her Masters program. TV has not compromised her. Plus she works part time 3x a week.

We have over the air channels only. Don't really miss cable/dish other than a few shows and we get to see those on Hulu. We watch movies now and then but if we have inside time it is racing or flying against each other or working as a team with each other on the computers over the LAN.
