Earthquake!

We had a 2.2 quake last night. For some reason I slept through it. No damage here.

Seriously?

Amature.

Ha, I'd never felt a really big eathquake until a 4.8 in Christchurch - whooo.

A few summers ago, we were spending a few days with some friends who had rented a house in Edisto Beach, SC for a week.

One morning just after getting up, I was sitting on the porcelain throne waiting for... well, you know.

There was a bathrobe hanging on the back of the door. It began to sway back and forth ever so slightly.

I wasn't sure I was seeing what I thought I was seeing, so I blinked and rubbed my eyes. I was... and it kept swaying for about 30 seconds. As I remember, I think I could just barely feel it.

There's a big fault line down that way (Charleston), and I bet this kind of stuff happens fairly often in the area... it certainly wasn't strong enough to make the news.

Any of you California dudes ever experience something that mild? Can you feel or see similar effects from a 1.5 or less?

The house was two stories... about 10-12 feet off the ground with parking beneath, and one central core storage room about 10'X10'...relatively new construction (built since Hugo to new code with HVAC 10-12 feet up, too). Similar to this...

Yikes. I always thought an earthquake was something that made the leaves of the house plant wiggle, and you say "Ah, it wasn't my imagination." 4.8 felt big, the walls were moving 4" in both directions. So 6.6

6 am.....totally demolished my High School. It was brick built in 1923. Spent 4 years in temporary bungalows....they rebuilt the school but due to student population growth the bungalows are still in use.

Loma Prieta in SF Bay Area was bigger, but I was in Santa Barbara by that time. Felt it but not as bad for me then....200+ miles differential.

That 5.6 we had summer before last was kind of cool. The fact that it happened almost directly beneath a set of reactors was not so cool. People here were freaking out. My cats were a good indication of an aftershock before I could feel it.

The Nisqually Quake (2001) at 6.8 for 45 seconds was the largest that I have experienced, and I'd rather not do it again.
