A no-kill shelter is just that. They keep the animals until someone adopts/rescues them.

And one can't assume that the previous owner dumped the dog or mistreated it. Many dogs run off because they just wanna feel the wind in their ears.

Coupla summers ago, ours was in the back yard for a 10 minute potty break and was not there when I called for him to come back in.

The idiot TWC dudes had left the gate open on the far end of the yard... after I had asked them to make sure they latched it when they left.

After putting it on our neighborhood email listserv and getting no results for a coupla hours, a neighbor three houses down walked over and showed me a Facebook post he had received from some friends four blocks away. He recognized him as ours and his friends' post said they had him in their back yard. He called them on his phone to make sure they were home and I went to get him.

After that, I always check behind anyone who has to go in our backyard before letting him out because that taught me that it's not smart to trust them to be conscientious.

Final update on the yellow lab:
The first tag I checked was not a rabies tag - it was a license.
The second tag was a rabies tag.

After talking to the shelter administrator yesterday, my wife decided to roll the dice and call the number provided by the vet who issued the rabies tag.

The guy who answered said the dog was his, but that somebody was supposed to be watching after it while he was working out of town. He gave my wife that person's number.

Wife called person #2, who said it was not convenient for her to come get the dog but that she would meet me at the gas station near her house. She said she really wanted to get the dog back soon because the other dogs missed it. Never told my wife "thanks" or anything.

The woman showed up at the gas station and asked me how I ended up with the dog. I told her the story... that the dog was at that gas station and they were going to have it picked up because it kept going into the store. I asked around and nobody knew who it belonged to, and being on the side of a busy highway made me concerned that it would get killed. The woman told me, "Oh... well, she's never crossed the highway before."

I explained to her that the county has a leash law, and that she was lucky to have the dog back; that I had tracked the owner down by the rabies tag that was 4 years out of date, and that by the way, that is also a law. The local clinic only charges $8 for a rabies shot. The woman was completely dismissive, and starting to get snippy. Hell, it ain't my fault she's irresponsible.

Turns out the license tag is so old, that the county that issued it has re-issued the number - which explains why I was getting conflicting information. It is probably also 4 years old, like the rabies tag.

Before she left, she asked me if I had seen the other dogs - because they are missing also.

I stand by my comment in an earlier post:

I still have a very poor opinion of humans who lose their companions. Whether 2 or 4 legged....
Dogs and children are babies....and they should be treated as such.

Adults are not babies...when they neglect taking care of their babies...2 or 4 legged.....there should be consequences.

That dog would have been better off at the shelter where she would have been adopted into a nice home.

Not faulting you Cash....just stating my opinion....

I also feel that since the dog was infested with fleas when she was found...and the lady mentioned other missing dogs...a call to the local animal welfare services is in order. She could be a hoarder - which explains her comment about the other dogs and not wanting you to come to her - but meet you at the gas station. She's hiding something. . Those people who hoard animals are always neglectful of their well being.

Even though it doesn't seem like it now, that is certainly a good long life for any dog, particularly a Bull Terrier.
Sorry to hear of the loss of your pup.

They are such great dogs with kids!
Many people think that they are some type of pit bull. A friend of mine had one and he was the nicest dog with people and especially kids.

Oh, fount of collective wisdom . . .

What can you tell me good/bad/indifferent on getting a Shetland Sheepdog puppy in late spring/early summer? My wife just retired & she is on the warpath for a dog. It has to blend with an existing 3 year old Queen of the House cat. We have a good fenced backyard for ‘the business’ and self-exercise & a great neighborhood & city for leashed walks. I am committed to properly train it btw. I had a Sheltie-cross as a kid so I have a rough knowledge.

And we have discussed a shelter dog & the answer is no. Long ago, we have both had success & failures with that.

Thanks

Ian

Shelties are prone to some genetic problems due to overbreeding, I can tell you that.

Will want a lot of exercise. Small sheepdog is still a small working dog.

Good. It will keep my wife busy. She has only been home for a month & a half - and I was gone for 2 separate weeks - and she is already driving me crazy.

We have researched a lot of breeds & it seems most have some genetic issue or other but breeders are offering some testing for what that is worth.

Mom had a Sheltie that had skin problems on her little snout. We put sunscreen on her all the time. When I was young and in shape, I ran that dog at about a 6 minute mile pace for a shade under 12 miles. Got back to the house, let her out back, and she went to running laps around the yard, as she was given to doing. Great little dog, not as cuddly as the one I have now, but a sweetheart. She would herd my kids when they were little.

Found this on the Amazon Prime video page. I know we have some big fans of these little guys on the forum. I know nothing about the 2016 film other than it's in the comedy drama genre.
