Dad hurt badly in bike accident. Hit a deer.
Dad is 67. Still competitive in Triathalon. Tough SOB for his age.
Riding his road bike on Newport Rd in Ann Arbor, MI. Wooded area, decent downhill slope. Deer shot out from the forest and he hit it. Went over the bars. 4 broken ribs, broken colar bone, 2 fractured vertebrae. All spinal function seem to work, head seems to be ok, but I'm taking report from my MIA that......ummmm.....might not be a reliable reporter. Even if it comes out on the lucky side, I feel terrible for him. He hates being cooped up. He spends tons of time outdoors. Can't stand depending on others. Flying home tomorrow. The randomness and staccato of life stuns me occasion.

I've done the 4 ribs and a vertabrae, OUCH! get him walking as soon as you can. The picture above is very impressive! great tone for a 60+ year old! Please get him to a bike shop to teach him how to use a quick release. His front QR isn't tight.

Crap!
Best wishes from us to your dad. I know what you mean about being cooped up for someone that is active.

That's awesome that he's doing TRIs in his sixties. It takes a lot of time to train & maintain equipment. Ask him if he'd consider mud racing. I took it up this year & it is a blast. I did a Spartan Race last weekend & it's every bit as challenging as triathlons. Anymore I'm paranoid to get on the bike, too many people that don't care if I die under their wheels. The Gym is a PITA to get in & get my swimming done.
I was looking at the results last weekend & there's not many people over 60 competing. Glad he's ok, cycling is just plain dangerous around these parts.

deer........is there an over overpopulation problem in you're area? there was when I lived in ohio to the point where they would have to do mass shootings to dent the population due to so many accidents involving them.....
hope your dad makes a full recovery, help him stay positive and pro-active in the process, this is the most important part....

Clearly, he needs to wear blaze orange and mount some deer whistles on his bike. I'd bring him some as a gag.
I hope he heals up well, and I expect he will. |

Sorry to hear. Those deer have become a menace in the U.S., my elderly parents have had deer collisions but in the car. This is another level. It makes it scary for me to ride a MC out in the country, would not have thought of the danger on a bicycle but there it is.
I hope he has a relatively quick recovery but it will take some time under the best scenario.
