David, I'm supposed to be racing against her on the XR1200s. She's tiny! She's going to kick my butt!
|
^ If that's your attitude, she's already beat you!

1) when looking at the podium pic it takes a second. Yep she is standing up. 2) you would be one of many. She is darn fast. I hope both she and her brother are there. I remember reading a press release to the effect that MOB racing had lost its funding. The big sponsor lost a contract or something like that. Good luck at Indy. I may zip down for the Mile. |
Indy -- Back to back mile wins
How many podiums has Danica had in the same time span?
http://media.racer.com/images/2013/08/19/am3_439631.jpg Robin Miller on bike racing's best-kept secret - Racer.com Running 135mph going into the corner, inches apart and sideways, created easily the most exciting spectacle on two or four wheels. After watching a Fairgrounds' finish where the top six were separated by a few feet, the late open-wheel star Jimmy Caruthers opined: “God, if anybody saw this they'd never come to another Indy car race.” Harry Gant was once asked if any of the American Motorcycle Association stars could be stock car drivers and he quickly responded in the negative. “Their balls wouldn't fit through the window,” he reasoned. |
My dad raced flat track and speedway at Ascot Park back in the day. You want to talk about crazy? Thats it.

Wow, even knowing she won, that was exciting! That pass from 4th to third looked really aggressive, but since 4th place dropped off the pace, I guess it was just a trick of the camera.
How cool is that? |
Wow, that was quite a race!
Thanks for posting that. |

While the speeds are awesome and it takes a lot of strength to ride flat track, not to mention the skill and reactions, the bikes are so well set up that really you can do this. Whether you're in the top 1 % in any sport or not is the difference between the winners and their equipment and the rest. I've experienced this all my life on the track. I've never had professionally tuned equipment and I usually accepted my position in the field due to that fact. Then someone comes flying by in a POS machine letting it all hang out and you know then that equipment only helps. I remember one time in a kart race at Firebird running mid pack. I started mid pack and pretty much stayed there as the field spread out. About 15 minutes into the race this POS kart comes up and by me. He had started way back there in a field of 40 or more. The driver got his shoulder and part of his back out of the seat and up on the inside side pod gas tank to get through the corner on my outside. (Clear on that? ;)) I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was like Pig Pen form Charlie Brown just blew my doors off. (Alas, no doors to be blown off.) No one apparently told this chap that yo had to stay in the seat during the race. Imagine climbing out of this in the corner at 90MPH: https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/i...5s-AWi7zy6pqRP https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/i...hZS8FRLc-M5AAA |
she is getting old and losing her looks, now she has to rely on driving and personality.

Shayna and Roger Penske/MD are/were just TIGERS. It's a chess game on and off the track. Mental as much as physical skills and equipment (gender not really a factor unless you believe woman don't have the TIGER gene - don't tell Michelle or Shayna) Team Penske looked for less obvious ways to do what that fellow did to you in that turn and Mark had the talent and determination to make it work in the race. The Sacramento race shows 3 evenly matched RACERS on evenly matched equipment and on this night she ran a better race, getting into the sweet spot for the pass - really a great ride from the top 3 - great sport For me it has been so great to watch Alonso the last two years running with inferior equipment and squeezing out results through great will and skill. - and if I must bring Danica into it - this is where she loses me. She has the equipment and she does know how to use it - but she seems to lack that ability to let the beast take over. Granted she is a rookie this year, but it always seemed to me like the fire burned low, that she was image conscious - how could she not be. Of course there are as many ways to lose as there are to win, but maybe in her case that is the result of the position she has been placed into because of her personality and gender and hotness - instead of earning it by results which bring confidence and knowledge enough to be able to go into the zone that brings success on a track - and to be willing to lay it all on the line - life and limb and pretty little face included (apologies and RESPECT to Niki Lauda) I kind of feel sorry for her, all the pressure, and she is intelligent and must be as aware as anyone as to her position in the game. I have no problem with her getting compensated over and above - she is paying a price for it if , especially if she is looking for real respect as a RACER. Sorry if this is incoherent rambling - day off and I find the topic very interesting and am just thinking out loud, even if doing a poor job of it. |
