They really just need to bring back the 30 year rolling exemption. Or at the very least, allow older cars to pass just based on the sniffer test.

^^^^That. I wish they would get rid of the stupid visual test. All that matters is what comes out of the tail pipe.

I was all for this before moving to LA. There are a ton of $800 beaters run all over the place from that era that really will benefit continued smog testing. A good compromise would be a sniffer only or a collector's plate that does not allow a beater truck to fall under a smog exemption.
The argument for a smog exemption for collector type vehicles is that they are hardly driven an usually well tuned. G |

Don't forget fixing smog levels at what they were when the car was manufactured. Seems like some guys have noticed increasingly stringent smog levels for their cars when they have it checked every two years. My car can easily pass what it was supposed to for the year it was built. But it's going to have problems passing smog levels for 2012. Or 2020.

Good point Noah. Also, if I say that beater trucks would benefit from a smog test, it would be so they don't drive around burning a quart of oil every 10 miles. I have lived in states where there was no smog test whatsoever, and some vehicles looked like the mosquito abatement truck going down the road.

Well, in the 3 times I've smogged my car in CA, the maximum allowable levels have stayed the same. But there are other guys on Pelican who have posted that they've noticed increasingly stringent levels for their normally-aspirated cars. Reading the letter of the law, that's not supposed to happen. A car is supposed to be smogged to levels appropriate to its year of manufacture. At least that's the way I've read the vehicle code (not that my opinion/interpretation is worth anything).

I wish there were only 9 people in the senate. Then we may even need an assembly too, with another 9. That would be nice. So, JB, are you following this bill? Is it dead or up for reconsideration? I couldn't figure it out with a quick web search. G |

It will never pass, the bill.
Yeah, they have been tightening up the requirements for the 1970's cars, why I sold my '79 bug

Try buying a new OEM catalytic converter for a relatively rare car made in 1976. You can't substitute smog parts from a different model without CARB's permission so often you simply can't find the parts necessary to bring an older car up to spec. If you can they typically cost an arm and a leg. BTW it's illegal to sell a used catalytic converter in California but it's perfectly OK for Joe-asshat to cash one in for recycling, even though the odds are he stole it off a pick-up. Go figure. |

A friend's pickup just had his CAT stolen in Houston. He actually likes the way it sounds now!
