Extra shipping charges after an item has been sent?

On June 15th, I paid $80 for an item. It was agreed upon by the seller and myself that the cost would be $80 shipped. On June 22nd, I received an e-mail stating the item would be going out Monday for sure. So I wait.

Today I received an e-mail that says the item just went out yesterday. The excuse being that it was summer, family, etc. I understand this, but it would have been nice to explain the package would be late via a message or e-mail. I also note that although the seller did not have time to drop me a message, he DID have time to post roughly 10 other items for sale. But the one that bothers me most is that he says the package cost more to ship than he originally thought, and would I please send him an additional $22.95 to cover the shipping.

We agreed on $80.00 shipped. At $102.95 shipped this was less of a deal and I certainly would not have bought the item.

To sum up:

1) Item paid for on June 15th for an agreed shipped price of $80.00
2) After a wait, I was told the item would go out on the 25th
3) Item does not go out until the 3rd of July, with no communication in between.
4) Seller is asking for an additional $22.95 for shipping, even though we agreed on $80.00 shipped.

Am I obligated to pay the extra shipping? What do other Pelicans think?

If you agreed on $80 than that's all you should have to pay. It's not your fault that he miscalculated the shipping.

If he already shipped, then too bad. Was this an eBay deal? If so and he hasn't shipped already, you could get a refund. I got one recently when I sniped a guitar listed with free shipping for about half of retail. I think the seller figured it'd be better to refund my money and get negative feedback than send me the guitar for the winning price.

Apparently, it has already been shipped.

And no, not E-bay...but from the classified here.

Wow. I'm always very careful with estimating shipping for exactly this reason, but when I screw up, I eat the difference. If it was a huge difference (more than $50) I'd offer a refund to cancel the deal. But I certainly wouldn't ask for $20 more because *I* screwed up, especially after 10 days.

Let me guess, he forgot to take into account the fact that you're north of the border, right? I say tough luck for the seller, and if he tries to call you out publicly here on Pelican for being a lousy buyer, point him here.

He was well aware of the fact when we made the deal. I even pointed it out.

This is the kind of thing I consider to be a "hand shake" deal.

A real man would honor the deal and eat the shipping without saying a word to you about his mistake/problem.

The seller should eat the extra cost.

I use "$X shipped" a lot of the time as it makes it easier than having to get a bunch of shipping quotes.

I'm usually pretty accurate with the guestimate - if I'm off, I'll refund any excess if it's more than a couple of dollars, but never ask for more money if costs more than I expected. I view it as my fault for not double checking the rate before I post an ad.

Could be worst, charge $50 and the USPS stamp says $35...

Well was only $15 but it was withing the US.

Cross border shipping is just asking for problem unless using USPS

But, doesn't the cost to ship depend on where the recipient is located? When I ship FEDEX Ground, it can be say, $20 to ship a box in the general western US area, but $40 for the same box to make it to Florida or Maine. Maybe the seller was not aware of where the recipient lived?

Yes, and if it was the first time across the border he might under estimate the cost.

Sure, I would like most here, eat the cost but...

Sent 2 1/2 weeks later with no reply, and him selling many other parts in the meantime, weighs in on this.

Still, if the situation will morally bug you: split the cost and be done with it.
Or not.
