Back in 78', I used to subscribe to Skateboarder mag and look at those pics of the bowl, that the pipeline would dump into at Upland skatepark and think, someday I will be there. That did happen 10 years later, it was a memory of a lifetime. Being an East coast guy, I had to live through the skater mags. Dogtown was an awesome movie, this should be second to DT. Last year, I started my twin girls on the half pipe...

I was watching the X-games last night specifically the skateboard big air/trick competition, and it is amazing what those guys were pulling off--a 900 21' from the top of the ramp--front flips over the gap---just crazy.

If he expected his mother to pay for it - then yes. It's more of a maturity/ self sufficiency thing than a recreational focus thing for me. All of his friends who skate mooch off of their parents also. That did not happen back in the 60s when you were in your mid 20s. Unless you had issues of course, then ...well then...what can you do?

A good buddy at work has a now 25 or 26 year old son living this "skater lifestyle". Never finished high school. Suspended several times for drug use. Has no concept of his future. Flops from one buddy's parents' couch (who are also skaters, whose parent or parents are also enablers) to another as he wears out his welcome. Was excited as hell to get a "real job" printing and folding tee shirts at a local skating company. The "kid" is looking at a lifetime as a loser working menial jobs but, hey, he's "cool". Especially with the teens at the skate park.

Bad parenting? I dunno - his other two kids finished college and are starting successful professional careers. You tell me...

While I don't blame the lifestyle, I do see the proverbial "chicken or the egg" question. While I certainly recognize that perfectly normal healthy people enjoy the sport, I will say the vast majority of people attracted to it are losers. The sport itself is rather proud of its slacker/loser image, and plays it up big time. That's too bad - like the "thug lifestyle", it probably sucks in some good kids and makes them into losers.

I think that is the rare exception, though - I think it attracts idle losers, and encourages them to slack off even more, and become even bigger losers than they otherwise would have been.

I post a picture with no children, no moms, no thugs. Just a couple of people out having fun at the crack of dawn. Long before old jeff is even out of bed.

Exactly. When one has absolutley nothing with which to impress peers of his own age, one is reduced to hanging out at the skate park in a desperate effort to impress young boys.

Dippy's mom took the picture, by the way. Dropped him off on her way to work at the WalMart. She's so proud of him - she thinks he's the best skater at the park.

I think you downers are crazy. The same thing can be said for the mortorcycle scene, playing guitar in bands, surfing, etc. all of which I have been involved with except surfing. Yet I managed to go to college, law school and support myself since 18. At 40 I still love to watch the skaters at the parks do their thing. I can no longer do anything but cruise on my long boards but I enjoy watching

If a kid wants to be a loser then he will be a loser regardless of his interests. Just because I'm into motorcycles doesn't mean I have to join the hell's angels

Back in the 50s a person could be a surfer and do nothing but surf, eat fruit and fish and generally be a beach bumb. Not so now. Without an income, a person would need to be a criminal or a parasite and if that's the case, I blame the parent. Not the sport.

Doesn't happen,, my buddy Woody, is over 50 and still has game, the other guy is Jay Adams, look him up. While not all of us go the route that they have, those of us who skated back in the day still remember out roots. when I went to the Kona 30th party, I joked that Kona hasn't seen so much Gray hair since our grandparents dropped us off back in the 70s.. Not all the adult skaters are losers who can only work labor jobs, many are white collared & business owners..

One of my other childhood Buddies, he is closing in on 50, owns a successful advertising firm, married a very smart, hot wife, who has her own very successful career, both are college grads, and living the dream...


Course he is also a cyclist, so he also keeps in shape with that & surfing since he home is only 3 house from the ocean, in a very nice area too.. So not all skaters grow up to be losers..

You and your buds are prime examples of guys who can hold onto the passions of their youths, while growing into mature, successful adults who contribute to our society in a positive way. Good on you guys, and I really mean that. Keeping it all in perspective is what it's all about. Getting to "know" you on this forum over the years has been a pleasure.
