Attempted rape...at Guitar Center

Seriously, I don't even know why I go in that place.

What a bunch of jackasses.

That is all....

Every once in a while I tire of the craigslist scene and think about trading in something at GC. I really should know better...

I have a newish pedal I don't want and was thinking of trying to trade it at GC. But their used pedals are already pretty darn cheap, which means they must really lowball the desperados who bring them in. Which one were you at? Eliot Rd., Salt River or Peoria Ave.?

Elliot...it's closest to me (which is still not very close). Lowball does not even begin to describe it. I've gotten better prices for junk guitars at yardsales.

What do you have and what are you trying to get? Was thinking yesterday about trading in my early Peavey Predator (clone of Strat.) for a Fender. May be better to sell the Peavey on CL or EB and just buy the strat. from GC.

Attempted rape is a whole lot better than actually getting raped.

Hang on to it. Maybe one of your kids or grand kids will want it at some point.

We should have a musical instruments for sale section here. I'd much rather deal with Pelicans than CL'ers. I am trying to sell a Boss AC-3 acoustic simulator pedal and a Vox wah-wah, both in new condition. I'm probably going to buy a Morely volume/wah-wah pedal and am mildly shopping for an EQ and compressor pedal.

BTW, I bought my latest Marshall head from that GC on Eliot. It was already pretty well priced and I got them to throw in a new Marshall channel switcher pedal. When I was trying that amp out in the store, I cranked it up good after the tubes were nice and hot and I think I made a kid sheet himself when I played it as he walked by. I'm holding out for Gogar's Plexi for my next amp purchase.

Guitar Center at least catches a lot of stolen instruments, and gets them back to their rightful owners.

It might be rape if they FORCED you to trade in something.
You ASK them what price they would be willing to pay for something, or what credit they might be willing to offer for something in trade. They provide that number. If you like it you accept, if you don't you walk away. Unscathed and your virginity in-tact.

Musical instrument companies have to work on a large profit margin to stay in business.
Even more so on used equipment that might sit around for a long time.
Return on capital employed and all that stuff, the longer inventory sits around the more "lost oopportunity" they have to eat. The longer the part sits the less they make on the money they used to but it.
And if it does sell, it usually displaces the sale of a piece of NEW EQUIMENT, so more lost opportunity.
The number they pay has to be very low.
Profit margin on a piece of used equipment would have to be at least 100% to make it worth them bothering with it. It's more of customer relations thing, not a business they really want to be in.

Do they offer to sell equipment on consignment? that would probably be much better for both parties.
Their only investment would be shelf space and a little bit of labor to keep track of it. No real money tied up. It still takes away from their new equipment sales though.
If they sell it for an agreed-upon price you give them half.
If they don't sell it in an agreed-upon time you get it back.

That's why the thread is titled "Attempted Rape". To add insult to injury, the saleschmuck offered to sign me up for a GC credit card for an additional discount .

Just FYI, there aren't a whole lot of companies that are run as poorly as GC: How Guitar Center Will Kill Us All - BANG Your Head Guitars

Rick, I like your idea of a Gear For Sale page here. Maybe nostatic can petition Wayne for us when he gets back from his self-imposed exile.

Why are you so eager to unload it? You own it so keep it.

Don't get me wrong. I understand that feeling of owning something you're not really using anymore
but I have also learnt that keeping something is better than selling it for a discounted price.

Or put another way.
What would you regret more? Keeping it or selling it for less than its worth.

It's a very simple inventory management issue. I need to make room on the walls for a 12-string electric. Two walls full of guitars is bad enough...the wife gets bent way out of shape when the floor starts filling up with guitars too.

Also a cool idea, but I would still want to run it by Wayne first. It's his house, after all.

Er...well, actually that's an exaggeration, some of us do like a smart arse.
