GD Electronic Health Record makes me want to pop a cap in somebody

This was supposed to make things easier, save time, better living through tecnnology and all that crap, has not been playing out like that.

There are two "portals"(bunch of freakin' trekkies name this stuff), one to accfess imaging, radiographs, MRIs, bone scans and what not, one to look at hospital stuff, labs, dictated notes, that sort of thing.

I am logged in, trying to look at radiographs, but it ain't happenin', so I figure I can just look at the report, despite the fact that a picture is worth a thousand words, and I have no interest in reading that much, I just want to look at one little thing and see if the bone is turning to fetid goo, which I highly suspect is going on. Gives me an error message, something wrong with your account(that is currently logged in on the other side)

Call the number you call when this happens, that I don't need on speed dial because I seem to call it frequently. Talk to the guy, who can't figure it out, talk to the smarter guy, who figures out that they changed my password to access the system, in JUNE. Getting pretty close to the middle of July, and with Bastille Day right around the corner, you would think that if they changed my password in June, I would have noticed it one of the 50 GD times I have logged into that account since they changed it, or one would suspect I would.

Smarter guy can't make it go with the equipment available at this time, has to get the security team on it, will call them, and they will call me back. He gives me my office number, can they call that number after eight?. No, I won't be there, I will be at the hospital, or driving around, and I don't answer the phone when I am driving around, because even if I had a headset, it is a bad idea to be talking on the phone when you are driving around. I ask if I can call them, no I can't. They have a number, right? Well yes, but they have to call you and they won't be there until after eight anyway.

Is it any wonder I am a luddite?

Is this Cerner? That POS software was written by a disgruntled postal worker and intended for use by the DMV. Welcome to "stimulus driven" medicine. Ugh...

Do you know what system Kaiser uses?

Wife is moving in September, open enrollment October, I'm on Blue Shield she is on Kaiser.

My doc is old school and does everything on paper... cool thing about Kaiser is everything is electronic, you can even email your doc with questions... is that cool on not so much?

My doc is using this same software (I think) to access images and forward prescriptions to the pharmacy.
He is totally enamored with the system. In fact, he has become an advocate.

I hear much better things about EPIC. Cerner is a POS. I know that first hand.

Where does that leave Soarian then? One major facility canceled a multi-year conversion to go to Epic.

So much for that Hypocritic oath!

I think you need to yell louder. Something like, "this guy might lose a foot due to your incompetence. Fix it. NOW."

HPF Horizon...which she & most Doc's like..
they use GE for the Cath. Lab..
when it works ..
it's awesome..
alas..folks are still deciding..
beta,8-track,CD,vinyl..cheap..next yr..
and then of course will come the Gov...
they will use/demand a totally new and 'improved' system..
which some non-practicing health flunky will have pushed..

Computer programs should be required to have signatures and addresses of the asshats responsible. I just almost broke an eardrum on Yahoo news. The ad prior to the attached video must have been set at '12'...one higher than than the volume on 'Spinal Tap'.

Not so bad unless you are wearing headphones...........

Sounds as bad as WAWF which is what the Military uses to pay contractors. The problem is, they haven't trained the military to ENTER the information into the system! For example, the person who is supposed to enter information that something has arrived, has never been trained. And until it is entered as received, money does not get paid. Even the Net30 clock doesn't start.

I'm from the government, and I'm here to help!

GF was a nurse, and of the few times she vented it was disheartening.

Someone would always forget to stock the med cart, and the administrator who had the keys to the lock box had vanished.
Or, kitchen would make the wrong meal(restricted diet) and she'd be walking around the building trying to find someone who could fix it.
Nobody answered phones.
Schedule would get trashed as a result.

I suspect she spent 1-2 hours a day just trying to fix basic problems instead of patient care (i.e. a few minutes of compassion).

My wife says that since the advent of computer charting healthcare on her units has become worse, not better. Of course she would never outright tell her superiors that fact, even though it's common knowledge among the senior staff.

My dad's doctor is typing as he speaks with him, unfortunately he has a desktop unit so his back is to my dad most of the time, even when my dad lies to him until I call dad on it. I think docs who do this miss out on non-verbal clues from their patients.

I am currently on Cerner and had a migration to Epic postponed from May to Aug 1.
I fully understand your frustration.

Security guy called back a few hours later, I am in group 6, or section 6, something like that. All I have to do is click the hyperlink on my desktop. Me-What are you talking about, just give me the internet address. Have to use the hyperlink, only way it will work, seen too many movies with Jedi knights, here I thought they were all Star Trek guys. He does his thing, it will work until after I switch from the GE system in the office to Epic. He tells me no more trouble, will set it up after I "go live" with Epic.

I log on, look at my stuff, go downtown, do my PM shift at the wound clinic, luck out and they move my add on cases up, so I can start at 1630, instead of 1930. First guy, nice old gentleman, send one of his little piggies to path lab, he looks good. Guy number two, not so nice schizoprehic diabetic with a foot that smells like a dead muskrat that spent the better part of a week marinating in sewage. Little peppermint oil on the mask and you can tolerate a surprising amount of foul smell. Took off the black toe in the middle, no blood, take the toes on either side, more blood, but still has positive dead rat in the wall smell. Lay the bottom part of his foot open like you would gut a fish, found the pocket of nastiness, cut out the black stuff, flush it out really well. Something dead in there smell is gone, it is bleeding, wrap it up. Two hours start to finish on that guy. He will need one more trip, to the OR on this one, with a little luck he checks out with a half a foot and lives to walk around on it, until next time.

Long day yesterday, could not sleep too well because the back was sore from standing over guy #2, still jacked up from that wreck in October. A long time in a hot shower washing the stench of gangrenous tissue off and was sore anyway. Got to the office, go to check on what crazy guy's labs look like.

Locked out again, guy fixed it long enough to get off the phone with me, farging icehole bastage.

EPIC=failure.

Doesn't work well for anyone (e.g. getting an electronic report of how many X did we do last year and how long did it take and what did we bill) that was promised to be a "snap" takes months for a techno-toad to figure out and needs to be refined 5 times before you just give up...how can they sell this crap more than once? I think EPIC aced Motormeister 609, PCB (Porking the Customer from Behind).

Computers a GREAT when they work. They suck sweaty donky balls when they don't.

My Dr. is 100% converted to digital and likes it.

My Dentist does not own a computer. He does not have a FAX! Really. He uses a book keeping system from the 60s. He is an instructor at the local dental school so he stays current. But his practice is like stepping back to the 60s.

Tobra that's classic! We use epic at 1 hospital (of course not the other two or the office but that's another rant) and I got used to it. You can do h&ps fast but.... It generates so much meaningless crap. Auto filling in the physical, or is the ortho consult really checking the fundi now? All I want to see is what my partner wrote the day before and it takes a while to find that. At least it is legible now though.
