Bmw to bring diesel engines to USA

The US market is slowly but steadily starting to receive diesel engine options and the latest carmaker to jump the bandwagon is BMW, which has recently confirmed that it will introduce a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbocharged diesel powerplant in America. Dave Buchko, BMW Corporate Communications Representative (the man that was previously behind BMW North America’s diesel launch strategy), confirmed the information for Motor Authority, adding that the company has no time schedule of specific models planned at the moment. We played with the engine, which delivers 184 hp and a peak torque of 280 lb-ft (380 Nm) on the new F30 3-Series, which we think will also be the first US model to receive it, and we found a powerplant that manages to be both muscular and frugal. In addition to the four-cylinder oil burner, BMW will also offer a new 3.0-liter straight six, twin-turbo diesel in the US, which is expected to deliver at least 255 hp an a peak torque of 413 lb-ft (560 Nm). However, both powerplants have to be tested for the US spec, which means that their final outputs could change.

Think the smaller one is what's new, the X5 has a 35d option currently.

This is the X1. We saw a lot of them in Europe on this last trip and even several in China last year.

Vash- with the smaller engine they will make it an option in the smaller cars which don't offer it now? What I don't get is the 6 cylinder posted says 255hp when the current 1 is 265, Dunno

maybe this explains it better, also that 6 cylinder diesel is $$$ The time has come. BMW is planning to bring its European four-cylinder diesel engine to the U.S. market. They haven't yet said which American market models will get the diesel mill, nor exactly when it will debut. The engine will be the 181 hp 2.0-liter four banger currently available in the European 320d. Putting two and two together, we would guess that it will probably become available in the 2012 BMW 3 Series. BMW claims its 320d gets 57 mpg under fancy European conditions, so the new Bimmers could give Volkswagen's fuel thrifty models some real competition when converted to American.

They have been offering the 3.0 I-6 diesel in the X5 and the 3-series in the U.S. for the last 3-4 years.

2011. Yes I'd get another. From inside the vehicle, you cannot tell you have a diesel. The ONLY issue I have, which is a general problem with the X5 line, is the seat belt holder now chips the door pillar. This didn't happen on our last X5 (2000). I can't talk to cost that well, because I bought a left over 2011 in December of last year. I think we did $10K off list...

I like the sound of that too, but with my luck, by the time we see a 1-series 5 door with any power plant, they will have converted the 1-series platform to front-wheel drive. In general, I think the launch of the X1 is the death-knell for a 5-door one series.

When I was in Spain in 2007, I drove a 1 Series 5 door with the 1.8 liter, 140 hp engine. It was great. BMW makes a lot of lower end cars in Europe which they will not see here. The exact car I want is available in Mexico for a list price of $29,900. BMW Mexico

I'd take mine as a 128i please. I think it would be a fun car, but I may be projecting. I'll need something a few years from now to replace my 2001 3-series.

We just ordered a diesel x5 with all the trimmings. We have a 2008 V8 X5 now and this one will be mine (replaces a 2001). I'm pretty excited....it's not quite as fast as the V8 but the price, the mileage and the torque made it a no brainer. Should be here in two weeks.
