We dropped our baby girl off across country last year at Hofstra (Long Island, NY). A tough, but great day. Now she is going to a professional circus school (flying trapeze, I kid you not) in the UK next year. We raised someone who has taken spreading their wings to a whole new level...

Well done, Dad.

Sounds like your parenting skills were spot on. Congratulations! My daughter starts school tomorrow. (8th grade) Its a big year for her....and us. She is a straight A student and this is the year that placement for her next years in school is very important. I hope that my wife and I have done as good of a job as you sir.
I'll probably cry too when mine goes off to school on her own.

Again, Congratulations!

Most people I know don't start crying until their college-aged daughters end up in a "Girls Gone Wild" DVD....

Congrats on your daughter's next step in life...and congrats for you being there to make it happen.

Cheers...

Sounds like it was one of the greatest days of your life. Sounds like you did your job. Now her job is to shove off. And the very safest, most positive way for that to happen is for her to go off to college. She's going to have the time of her life.

We took my only son to Miami University (OHIO) 4 years ago next week. He was 4 hours from home so visiting wasn't easy. We knew he was where he needed to be and we were OK but at first it was a pretty lonely adjustment to go from 3 back to 2 however we are all better for it.

He graduated Summa cum lauda on May 5 (MY Birthday) with 3 degrees (BA Biochemistry, BA Economics and BA Zoology) 3.9+ GPA with honors! A great girlfriend that is as grounded as he is and a wonderful group of friends for life.

TODAY was his first day of class at the Univ of Toledo College of Medicine and within 5 min of the end of classes he was on the phone to me just like the first day of class since he was in grade school. This is a kid that couldn't wait for school to start, he couldn't learn enough. It's going to be kind of nice to have him within 2 hours so we can catch some time with him when he has time.

I hope he becomes a wonderful Physician that makes some contribution, then I know we did well!

Hey Rocket... I know what you're feeling. I'll never forget when I said goodbye to my two sons after moving them into the dorm.

The oldest at Charleston Southern a couple of months after his mom died... and the youngest at Clemson... four years later.

Funny, I was a little more concerned that the oldest would have a tougher time academically and getting out of bed and to class on time, but I never shed a tear after heading back home when I left him.

I knew neither one of them would have any trouble making friends and enjoying the college experience.

But it was when I said goodbye to the youngest that I choked up. I really don't have a good handle on why. We had gone up late on move in day to miss the crowds, and he was in an apartment on the edge of campus. It was dark. His roommates had helped us carry everything in and we had finished making his bed and hooking up his laptop and cable locking it to the bedpost, and there was a loud knock at the door. It was about six of his best H.S. buds who had moved into the dorms earlier and had come over to welcome him and were chanting "JOEL'S HERE! JOEL'S HERE!" at the top of their lungs. About 15 minutes later, another group showed up, and half of them brought their roommates, so all of a sudden there were about 20 extra people in there. I overheard a couple of Joel's roommates saying, "Who IS this guy?" to each other.

I told 'em, he's just a regular guy... but he's got a lot of really good, close friends.

I checked into a hotel and went all over campus with him the next day, helping him register for all of his classes... that was quite an ordeal. Then we had supper together and I told him goodbye and that's when I choked up. I knew he would be okay... I knew he would apply himself... I knew he would have tons of fun... I think I was just really tired... hadn't slept well in that hotel.

I will PM you our phone number in case there is anything my wife and I can do for you or your daughter. BTW, if you left her in town with a vehicle, these guys are absolute gems when it comes to the type of shop you want your kid to be able to call when service or repair is needed... great folks... have used them for years... and not far from campus:

More great stories and offers for help if needed. Thanks guys and keep the stories coming.

I'd like to say I did it all myself, but I have a great wife who pushes the kids more than I do. She's an inspiration to me and the kids.

BTW, we all (mom, 16 y/o son and me) got letters from our daughter and each cried as we read them.

Classes start tomorrow and she finds out if she made it into one of the three sororities
she wanted.

Rocket, it is a pleasure to read your story. You have done an admirable job raising your daughter. I too cried when we dropped our daughter off at USCB two years ago.

Skype works very well my friend, David

When I moved out from the family homestead it was not a week beofre my parents rented my room out....Mother said, "That was the happiest day in her life, because she didn't have to move again with out telling me where they were moving to."
