I finally, after a two year wait, was able to join a gun club with a nice rifle range, out to 400 yards. So I've been shooting the Creedmoor and started developing loads.
I'm going to my first benchrest shoot the 25th. My goal is to not finish last! It's not a true bendhrest rifle but we'll see how it/I do.
Here is the target from the best load. It measured .422. I'll load up 100 of these and see what happens.

what's it take to make shots like that?
I realize the rifle is rested on both ends. Plus a single shot or bolt action will typically be more accurate than a semi but
I have an HK 91 semi auto 308 and shoot out of the box ball ammo at 100 yards off hand or benched with open sights at a gallon jug and hit it easy. IF I setup my HK to "shoot" could I make a 400 yard shot with a scope ???
Not many places in my state to make a 400 yard shot. I am really fascinated with long range shooting.
I have a 50 BMG but there's not many places to shoot it here

You may could - after all the PSG-1 is a G3/91 at heart. But you'll probably ahead dollar wise to just build up a bolt gun. Spend your savings on good glass and reloading supplies.

In benchrest circles the above group isn't even that good from what I understand. You're talking sub .200 groups. But for me just starting I'll take it.
The approach in BR is also a bit different. You don't really 'snuggle up to the stock. You kinda just treat it like an egg. Your shoulder isn't even against the butt of the stock. You let the recoil com back into your shoulder. That's why these guys shot, along with the bullets having great BC, 6mm BR, fairly light recoil. You don't want a 30-.06 slamming back into your shoulder!

Here's the build sheet...

Barrel - Bartlien med palma contour 28"
Stock - Mastercraft varmint style. Barrel is free floating, glass bedded
Action - Remington 700, trued. Single shot
Trigger - Jewell, 2 oz. pull
Scope - March 10-60x52

Again it's not a true benchrest rifle. The caliber is all wrong, (they all shoot 6mm BR), + the stock is wrong. But I wanted an all around distance gun so I settled on the 6.5 Creedmoor.

I'm with you Red, precision long distance shooting is really intriguing, literally looking for perfection.

The baggies in the pic are the different worked up loads. Seems the spoon like 130 grain more so than 139.

6.5 Creedmoor is a great distance round.

Nice rifle. It'll be fun, especially in the 6-800 yard area.

Hey Mister long time!! Thank you. We'll see how I do during the competition. The shoot is what's called a score shoot. You have 6 targets on a single target. One is to sight in. The other five you shoot 1 round into each target with the desired result of hitting the dot in the middle of each. So a total score of one relay if you hit all dots would be 250x5. If you hit 4 dots and the other is in the 10 ring you'd have scored 240x4. There are 5 scoring rounds. You have 10 minutes to complete each round. Seems like a long of time but I'm sure when you are having to line up each target the time flies by.

Thank you Carter. I've shot it out to 1,000 yards but that was in Pa. The club I belong to has a range out to 400 yards, the only one in Ct. But hitting a steel plate at 1,000 is definitely awesome.
