Now you should really take it to a track and thrash it. No old car should be in that condition.

Not...

Holy Christ, that thing is beautiful. More pictures, please.

Steve Carlton 09-24-2012 10:28 PM

It'll be at least a few days, as I'm moving. My good cams are packed away, too.

Beautiful car Steve, well done.

Dottore 09-25-2012 07:57 AM

They don't get much prettier! Well done.

RWebb 09-25-2012 11:17 AM

time to go thru all the old service receipts and load them in a spreadsheet so you can figure out what was done and when

Great advice, I do this with all my cars. It's a pain up front, but once done allows you to search, sort by date and mileage, etc. I have probably 4" of receipts from my '88 waiting for input.

Steve Carlton 09-29-2012 09:29 PM

Took it out for the first time today. You know what- I think I should put a new alternator in!

LOL!

You need to put it back in the garage where it belongs! :)

You'll probably have to spend a few more $ to get all these bugs worked out from sitting. Just make sure you have AAA plus membership.

G

Steve Carlton 09-29-2012 09:48 PM

I know- what was I thinking? I've put about 46 miles on it so far, so it's costing me about $2/mile to operate. Not bad, huh?

I do have AAA Plus, so they give me 100 miles for free. RMG was 53 miles away, so there it goes. Dan was reachable by cell phone while he was camping and helped me out. Had one bar of signal strength while camping and texted his owner to pull my car into the shop after it arrives around 11pm tonight. Awesome service! A great recommendation from this forum!

onewhippedpuppy 09-30-2012 07:14 AM

Lol, the downside of a garage queen. They don't like to sit, so I'm glad to see you exercising it.

speeder 09-30-2012 08:15 AM

Alternators take a dive on air-cooled 911s that are not garage queens too. It's a common failure.

aigel 09-30-2012 10:03 AM

There aren't that many more things that can leave you stranded. Fuel system and a DME. Get a spare relay. There may be some suspension work needed and oil leaks may be more prevalent - both won't leave you stranded.

I'd rather buy a garage queen and bring it back to snuff than a high mileage runner. :)

G

Steve Carlton 09-30-2012 01:22 PM

Spare relay sounds like a good idea. I'll be speaking with Dan at RMG Enterprises tomorrow. The operating assumption is alternator, which is $550 for a new one + 2 hours labor. Not a big deal, but I'd like to find out if the charging system was tested during the PPI in Colorado.

During the PPI the engine and transmission were dry as a bone. The compression varied by a total of 4 PSI and the max leakdown was 4.1%. I think it's a very young car mechanically.

RWebb 09-30-2012 01:41 PM

just get it rebuilt

Steve Carlton 09-30-2012 01:45 PM

My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it.

speeder 09-30-2012 01:49 PM

Our host has it rebuilt for $286 here:

Pelican Parts - Product Information: 911-603-120-EX-M14

speeder 09-30-2012 01:51 PM

Steve, since this isn't your DD, get the Pelican rebuilt and I can put it in for you next time I'm up there, (soon).

Steve Carlton 09-30-2012 02:40 PM

Dan at RMG said every rebuilt alternator they've put in has failed and the only solid way to fix it is with a new one. I don't mind paying the diff and the car has already been dropped off there.

Appreciate the offer!

Wha?!? I can't think of a single reason why that would be true.

speeder 09-30-2012 06:36 PM

Yeah, I put a dealer rebuilt w/ Porsche warranty in my SC and never heard another peep from it. The service dept. at BH Porsche Audi puts them in, that would not be the case if they were pissing back on them.

Bill Douglas 09-30-2012 08:44 PM

Wow. Nice car Steve.

And who cares if it doesn't go. A car that nice I'd just sit in it in the garage LOL.

Edit: the alternator problem may just be bushes/brushes - cheap and easy fix.

Steve Carlton 10-01-2012 10:01 AM

May not be the alt. Cranked right up at RMG this morning...

vash 10-01-2012 10:13 AM

wow..struggling with a slow internet connection to see this car. looks like a Beauty!!

a 85?! very nice.

rebuilt alt? i had Riteway in SF build mine..(and about 4 of my friends). they are bombproof. not one has failed. cost about $180 IIRC. i feel like it was worth the risk..they come back spotless and new looking. my car is on mine for about 7 years..my brother's maybe 10.

give them a look. they really are lasting for us.

where did you move too? still near me in concord?

aigel 10-01-2012 11:17 AM

Why do you think it was the alternator in the first place?

G

Halm 10-01-2012 11:40 AM

As said earlier, a cheap and easy thing to do is change the relays and fuse. If it happens again, in my case it was part of the ignition switch. Part 964-613-012-00-M100.

Steve Carlton 10-01-2012 03:03 PM

RMG called and the alternator is bad and the battery is marginal. Dan said many years ago pretty much all the rebuilt alternators they installed gave out within 90 days. Maybe rebuilts are better now, I don't know, but the new one isn't much extra for the peace of mind. I don't want to get stuck again and lose hours waiting for a flatbed. Going to replace the battery as well and get a new DME, as the current one is 7 years old. Fuel pump "map" is marginal, so replacing that as well...

As Denis would say, my $26,800 car has now become a $29,000 car. Dan at RMG thinks the car is in amazing condition and well worth the $26,800.

I hope you mean DME relay! Keep it in the car as a known working spare.

Steve Carlton 10-01-2012 03:46 PM

Yes- relay. Install it and keep the existing one as a spare.

Bash- I'll be very near you. We should meet up.

Cool. Vash. Cell phone auto-correct...

Steve Carlton 10-11-2012 12:33 PM

Was heading for work in SF at 6:15am and the traffic to the bay bridge was off the hook bad. Took a detour across the San Rafael bridge, down 101, across the Golden Gate into SF with no slowdowns. Beautiful morning, stopped for an omelet before work. I need to do this more often...
