F1 Spa

Great start...then not so much.

Then...strategic pass of the year!!

DaveE 09-02-2012 11:46 AM

I thought the start sucked...

pavulon 09-02-2012 11:54 AM

Really? Weird smoke, then P.M. (accidentally but completely) nails it, then it went all NASCAR for a bit...but that Kimi pass was awesome!!

Noah930 09-02-2012 11:56 AM

Even if Schumi was missing 6th gear, Kimi's pass on him entering Eau Rouge was absolutely phenomenal. Wow. I thought of Stefan Bellof for a split second, there.

Grosjean didn't leave enough room for Hamilton at the start.

Flieger 09-02-2012 12:02 PM

Is there going to be a replay sometime?

Joeaksa 09-02-2012 12:07 PM

Cannot wait to watch the race on TIVO tonight... but it sure sounds like PM needs to start from the rear of the pack for a year or so....

Speed usually shows it again a day or three later. Check on their schedule...

tchanson 09-02-2012 12:53 PM

Grosjean is an idiot. This was his 7th first-lap crash in 12 races in 2012, but this time he took out 2 top contenders in Hamiliton and Alonso.

He's beginning to make Maldonado look like Alain Prost by comparison

Post race today the FIA gave Grosjean a 50K Euro fine and banned him from racing in the next round at Monza. Seems light to me.

I thought Maldonado absolutely flat out nailed the start, though I guess the stewards & telemetry don't agree and penalized him for jumping the start.

More post race from the FIA:

Maldonado will drop 10 places on the grid at Monza next weekend after being hit with two five-place penalties for separate incidents at Spa.

The first one was for his jumping start before the lights went out and the second was for causing the accident with Timo Glock at Turn 1.

Yeah, I saw that too while editing my above post. But video, it looked like he lucked out and timed the start perfectly. But apparently the stewards can look at telemetry, which may have shown otherwise. The Glock incident was separate from that, no? That's how he lost his front wing, correct?

yellowperil 09-02-2012 02:38 PM

pastor must have been rolling a fraction before we (TV audience) saw him dart to the middle. Had it been legit, it would have been the best start of all time. Also the Vettel
and Schuey incident shows what a poor design the pit-in route is. I liked the old Bus-
stop much better. IMO

javadog 09-02-2012 03:15 PM

Maldonado said his hand slipped off the clutch, so he knew he blew the start. It was hard to see from our camera angle but the drivers on the grid next to him saw it. Even Charlie Whiting was shaking his head immediately.

Grosjean should start every race from dead last, behind the safety car, or the pit lane.

Kimi's pass was one for the ages. I remember Bellof, but his last trip through Eau Rouge ended poorly...

What a beautiful circuit - have got to go there one year...

Its even nicer in person.

Hearing the guys on Speed comment that they needed to stop down for some "pommes and mayo" really brought back memories of the time we spent there. The local eateries there all have "french fries" cooked in the good old fat and locally (and in most of Europe) they use mayo and not katsup... tastes yummy!

If you get there, tour the areas around Bastogne where the fighting was really tough during the last winter of the war.

If you can, there are really four circuits in Europe that are a "do not miss" event. Spa, Monaco, Monza and Budapest...

I drove by the circuit on my way from Budapest to Eger & back. Does that count?

I completely forgot the race was on.

Ian,

You can redeem yourself by at least saying that you did stop by the BudVar brewery and have some of the best beer in the world while there???

No . . . but I did drink an amazing amount of Hungarian wine. And besides, they are Zero tolerance & I was always driving.

Oh & Joe, here are a couple of pictures completely unrelated to the topic:

3 Harvards at the Toronto Airshow today:

And my father beside one in 1944 (on the right).

Kind of cool to see & hear them.

Sorry for the OT . . .

Joe,

What is it about Budapest that makes it more special than other F1 circuits? (I get Spa, Monaco, and Monza.)

Joeaksa 09-02-2012 04:48 PM

Noah,

Budapest is the people and countryside. Hungary is a wonderful country and the people love Americans, so its not hard to enjoy yourself. Plus the ladies are... well they are tall, good looking and like to have a good time. Add some excellent goulash and Budvar to the mix and its a very good time. Praha (Prague) is much the same...

Monaco is the atmosphere, the sea, the absolutely wonderful views and the sound of a racing engine going around the city streets. Truthfully I enjoyed it more with the older F-1 cars, the ones that were not all automated and the driver actually drove and shifted manually. Those were men...

Monza is raw speed...
