WWII vet, 92, kills intruder with single shot in Kentucky
- By James Eng, NBC News

A 92-year-old World War II veteran says he wasn’t scared and was only protecting himself and his property when he shot to death an intruder who broke into his home.

Earl Jones, of Verona, Ky., had already been the target of three separate break-ins in August, deputies said, according to WLWT-TV. So when the Boone County farmer heard a bang in his basement early Monday morning, Jones was ready, quickly grabbing his loaded .22-caliber rifle from his bedroom.

When the intruder kicked open the door leading up from the basement, Jones fired a single shot.

“He kicked the door and as soon as he got inside, it was all over,” Jones told WLWT-TV.

Good for him. I hope I can still be making contributions to society at that age.

The version I read said he rather methodically got ready and then sat in the chair and waited for them to open the door. I'm all for it and glad the bad guy died. But in some places an overzealous DA would say he wasn't in fear for his life and didn't have to shoot the guy.

At 92, I would be in fear for my life every waking second.

Does being ready and waiting mean you don't need to shoot in defense of your life? He was ready, but if he didn't take the shot they could have easily killed him.

I do note your use of the word *overzealous*, I think I know where you stand.

He should have killed them all! I wouldn't want the cops hearing anyone's version but mine. However, had it been me and my lawyer had told me to say a word (otherwise, I'd keep quiet), I wouldn't have said anything about getting ready and waiting for them to come through the door. Let the cops figure it out. No need to say anything other than, "I'm old and frail, I was in fear of my life, etc."

Here in Texas, if they break into your house, you don't have to run. I believe you can shoot them with the assumption being that breaking into your home means they aren't the welcome wagon.

Well, the obvious solution is that next time he should use a suppressed .22. That way the rest wwill come up through the door instead of high-tailing it out with their dead buddy.

Given the scenario described, he very likely would have been charged in California

If you can show the intent to harm, they don't even have to be in your house in KS. Likely scenario would be shooting someone as they attempt to break down your door, totally legal (and rightfully so). Get off my lawn........not so much.

I thought for sure that a M1 Garand would be in this story.
