Too big to fail
|
I have a crisis: cat pee
So, my wife got a new cat back in June from a rescue. It's a Persian of some sort, 2 years old, and it came with a backstory of having grown up in a cattery, whose owner died, needed a new home, yada yada yada. Supposedly it had been placed a couple of times, but was returned to the rescue because the other cats didn't get along with it or were howling or someone had allergies or some BS. It also came with very specific needs, like it had to have a certain kind of food served in a certain kind of dish arranged in a certain fashion, yada yada yada. My wife had another Persian for something like 15 years, and basically wanted a replacement for that cat.
We get cat home, and there's the normal disruption with the other cats. We expected it, no big deal. They sorted it out amongst themselves. The specific feeding requirements turned out to be BS - the cat will eat anything in a 50' radius that's not locked down. Now the real problem starts: for the past month or so, she's started peeing in places other than the litterbox. The wife has offered up a number of excuses:
She's also tried a $50 pheromone device - like a plug-in air-freshener, only it's to make the cats happier and it's $50. She wants to try pscyh meds next. On top of all that, this retarded little cat has breathing issues; her nose is too small to get enough air, so she wheezes. She also has dental issues; she needs several teeth pulled. The estimate for these two ops is ~$800. By that point she'll have $1500 sunk into this monster. And this cat smells; it does not have good kitty self-grooming habits, it constantly farts (which is probably the food) and it's breath smells like a garbage disposal (bad teeth). I honestly can't see what it has going for it. I can see if this was a cat that she'd had for 15 years, like the last one, but she's only had this one for a couple of months. My vote is to write this one off and try again. I think this thing got kicked back to the rescue for the peeing issue; my guess is that it was never properly housebroken, either that or it just didn't give a damn. Today was the kicker - the little fücker peed on/in my laptop case. It was laying on the floor, next to the dining room table, and for whatever reason, she climbed on top of it and peed on it. One of the pockets was open, and was filled with cat pee. I have to take the laptop on a flight tomorrow, which will not be pleasant. So how do I get this resolved without a divorce? ![]()

Now in 993 land ...

It would not survive at my house. I would tell my wife I am taking it to the desert along with my .22 lr. The end of the negotiation would likely be that it goes back to the rescue or is put down.
I really like cats - when they are outside and swing by for some food and loving. I like how they smell when they come in on a cold winter day. I know this isn't much help, but you need to put your foot down as hard as you can w/o going into a divorce. G |

Tough one, because logic doesn't apply to people who love pets.
Unless you're my wife. Our cat started peeing around the house. We went through the same questions as you. After a week or 2 of the peeing, he took a dump on my daughter's bed, only an hour or 2 after I'd cleaned the litterbox. My wife and I were both livid, and neither of us had a second thought. I took the cat to the spca that afternoon. He hasn't appeared on their adopt webpage, so I think they put him down. Oh well. In your case it sounds like you've hit the end of the road, and you need her to see reason. I would put it this way: it's pissing everywhere, and we can't elevate everything in the house to a level where the cat can't get at it. If you can't think of a way to stop the peeing, it really has to go. Personally, I can't stand cats. I think they're dumb animals who offer very little in return for everything they take. I find them selfish and uncaring. I much prefer dogs. Anytime someone says "cats are smart for this or that reason" and "dogs are dumb, just look at them" I ask them when was the last time they saw a seeing-eye cat. Or a drug or bomb sniffing cat. End of story.

That cat has some serious health issue by the look of the eyes.
It probably doesn't have a good quality of life. That's all I'm sayin'. |

Usually if one of my cats starts that there is a reason, like a kidney infection or something along those lines. Or it is just pissed off at you

The cat had a full checkup and a bunch of tests about a week ago, with an emphasis on urology. No problems detected.
The vet suggested putting the cat on glucosamine, because maybe the it was having a problem getting in and out of the litter box. My wife bought it, hook line and sinker. The problem is, the cat poops in the litter box, but pees wherever she damn well feels like. And it jumps all over the furniture and cat tree, and runs around like crazy, so there's no issue there.

Awwwww, cute cat. We have 2 persians and they bring so much into our lives. I've even thought of banking the DNA of my favorite one for later cloning. The cat is peeing around the house because its pissed at you for whatever reason. Just keep trying new things until it stops peeing. Health problems and vet bills can occur with any pet. Gotta roll with it.

What if the cat "ran away?"
No good? Definitely roll up the windows of all your cars, keep doors closed to minimize contaminated areas. Oh, and what Capt Paul said, totally.
