A good hug from Dad might be all she needs right now.

Oh that breaks my heart to hear that! Your poor daughter. Yes, support her and be at her side and counseling is always a good thing. Big hugs!

Becky. I feel completely helpless and my girl is hurting...

I don't know much Art, but I know guys like you, and admire them.

Turn into the wind, launch the alert 5 Dad. You are not helpless: it is imperative that you figure this out soonest. Grieve later.

Art, is your town's police department able to investigate this adequately?

Checking Nathan's cell-phone records for the last incoming/ outgoing calls, what time those calls were made, who he talked to, what was said, what Nathan said he was going to do (call a AAA tow truck?), maybe the person heard something in the background?

Hard to think of what to do. I know grieving families appreciate receiving good home-made food, not sure what kind of food though. :(

Did you read the OP? He left his cell phone in his car. So that would not be of help.

Very odd story and very sad, it sounds like he suffered a head injury that may well have been survivable if he'd gotten medical attention pronto. But we'll never know that one. Of course it could be something else.

I went through the loss of very close friends as a teenager and it still hurts to this day if I think about it. Tough situation and my condolences to you and your family.

Wow Art, your family's faith and bond have really been tested recently. The way all of you have risen above all this adversity is really a testament to how well you and your wife have created a tight knit, loving family. I don't know what I would do in a situation like this.

My prayers are with yours and Nathan's family and friends and especially for your daughter. Having you as guide will lead them through this darkness, of this I am sure. Hang in there buddy.

My deepest sympathy for your family and Nathan's family, Art.

Thanks everyone! My brother (retired Ann Arbor detective) said that he believes that this was a head injury and not ETOH/drugs due to the circumstances, but ina few weeks the toxicology results will come in. It doesn't really matter as his life was taken regardless but it may help others deal with this. We'll get a grief counselor (pro) from church to meet with Becky and Dina (our exchange student). We're going to a meeting at a friend's house in a few, then a memorial service tomorroe evening and then we'll see when the funeral will be. Becky will have a rough time going through this but we have a very strong faith that servers us well in times like these.

Thank you to all of you who have prayed and send kind thoughts and good advice. I think it will help Becky that Dina is with us this year and she has a "sister" to talk to and discuss things she won't discuss with us. Both of our kids are like me in that they get very quiet when they are hurting and are not expressive with their emotions. It was a very rough day today...

So sorry to hear this.

Art, my daughter is 29. And when crap happens I still want to rush in and make everything right. But some things can't be fixed. If you are there for her well...probably the best you can do is make her feel safe.

I wouldn't normally quote someone on a thread like this but i really feel like this hits the nail on the head.

I'm so sorry Art, just found this thread. Prayers for you & your family that you all have the strength to get trough this crisis.

Sorry to hear about this Art. Best wishes to all involved.

:( So sorry this happened to this young man with so much ahead of him.

As I'm sure you know, it is almost impossible to know how huge this is to your daughter. At that age, something like this rocks you much, much harder than it does after you have a few more decades on you. Hold her close. You're doing all the right things with the counselor, etc., but even with that, she's gonna hurt for a long, long time.

I'm not telling you anything you don't already know, but do remind yourself often. She will eventually be okay... with, and because of, you guys as her loving and caring parents.

Hydrocket 09-08-2012 11:50 PM

You and your family are in my thoughts...

redstrosekNic 09-09-2012 06:13 AM
