My New Toy......E46 M3

Love it. Plenty quick and has all the options. 1 owner with FSH and 136,000kms on the clock. Has taken a bit to get used to the SMG but now I have, it is brilliant. I know about SMG pump issues, but an SMG pump is cheaper than a 911/Boxster rebuild after a IMSB failure. Plus, like the IMSB hysteria, I think the SMG is the same. You only hear of the bad ones on the internet.

Next up is a lower job (35mm) and staggered 19" CSL's.

Good looking car! A former coworker had his smg go out and as I recall the totally rebuild transmission wasn't too crazy expensive. Much cheaper than a rebuilt boxster engine.

I love the Jeckyl and Hyde nature of this car. Slip the trans into auto mode and it just cruises along, albeit a bit weird when it changes like a manual but you don't have to move anything, or slap it in full paddle shift mode and the thing just comes alive. I love the sound as the motor gets up to it's 8k redline
Was also looking at C32's but just like the sportier nature and look of the M3.

Nice! What is the BMW world's opinion of auto mode? In my F1 gearbox Maserati coupe the recommendation is to avoid using auto, as the computer slips the clutch to provide smoother shifts. It's not harmful to the gearbox, but it does wear the expensive clutch quickly.

I have an '02 6MT M3. I was scared off of the SMG because of everything I'd read in the forums. I should have at least gone and driven one.

I've tried SMG in the previous M5 and didn't care for it, and that's supposedly much better than the version in the E46 M3. I'd go with the 6-speed in that, the M6 or M5. I did like the DCT in the E90 M3 though.

If you are thinking about tracking the car, forget the staggered 19" wheels and go with a square 18" setup.

Sold the Boxster. Got it for a good price, spent a couple on it and made a couple, so can't complain. Great car, but to impractical for me. Not to mention everybody and thier dog always sat up your a$$ or wanted to race. I find the opposite with the M3. I get the thumbs up from young blokes in their turbo Jap cars.
