You can call me Popeye

I've been looking for a while for a small-ish sailboat that I can learn in. Well Copart had this little item listed close to where I hope to be by this time next year so I dropped a bid on it and won.
It's a 24' Jensen. Obviously it is in need of a little TLC but for the price it's to be expected. It will actually cost more to have it transported to the marina than the purchase price as I got the boat only and no trailer for it.
I'll post more pics as I get them.

Cool. I'm actually going to sign up for a sailing class so I can rent some small boats and go out with my son. He did summer sailing camp a few years and it is one of the few outdoor activities he likes. I just need to stock up on dramamine...

On my bucket list is to live in the marina for a year or two on a boat.

Yea Dramamine. I should probably put that on my supply list also.

The first task on the list will be a bottom refinish. Then refinish that ugly pea green band.

Don't know where you plan on sailing but if in an area where there is any commercial traffic at all I would suggest you take the basic boaters course from the US Power Squadron or someone like them. Besides basic navigation they will cover the rules of the road (who has right of way), how to communicate with commercial vessels, etc.

I have spend the last 20 or so years sailing in or near the ICW, in ship channels and off -shore all along the TX coast. When you meet a tow pushing six barges and he tells you he will see you on the one, it is best if you know what he means.

Tonnage rules - big time.

Enjoy your boat

That looks great, actually! How much does it cost for a slip in MDR these days? I grew up on a lake with a sailboat, it's a lot of fun and a great social activity to bring friends along. I've also lived on a boat up in Marin county many years ago, it was barely bigger than that one.

Here's an old picture of my Mom sailing our C-boat in MN. back in the '70s. She is truly a great sailor.

Can't say I know. This one is about 2000 miles north of MDR.

My first plan was to buy/learn here and then sail it north but I quickly learned the folly of that plan. Once I get up there I'll have no reason to sail it anywhere but local waters.

Johnson boat works in Minnesota. That was an older wooden C-scow when the pic was taken, almost 40 years ago. We have a owned a lot of sailboats, (including my Mom's family over the last 80 years), we have a couple new-ish fiberglass MCs now.

A few nice canoes as well. Minnesota is lake country.

Congrats on the "new" boat, Kevin!

Denis, great pics! When my wife and I campaigned our J/22 (J-Boats, 22 footer) in the Southeast, we had a few scow classes racing out of our home yacht club. They always looked like a lot of fun. BTW, Johnson Boat Works sold off their scow business to Melges Performance Sailboats, and I think their old facilities are now called White Bear Boat Works.
