The real crime is that a run of the mill cop on a very safe UC campus gets paid $122,000 a year. And he's not even a captain or a chief.

Btw - they were protesting the high cost of tuition and the high salaries in the administration. I wonder how much those settlements cost the taxpayers or the students. UC used to be free to CA residents.
The administration told the cops to get them out by 3:00pm. The administratio had some conference starting around then. Can u imagine a worse time of day to to do this on a college campus?

Who determines and how do they arrive to a $30K each settlement? Where's the money come from to pay them... taken from the city coffers, police pension fund, liability re-insurance?
Anyhow, the bottom line is 'we the people' are the ones paying the victims. Can't we all just get along? NOW GET OFF MY LAWN!

Todd,
You are absolutely correct about that. People need to pick their battles wisely but many young people lack the experience and emotions get the better part of them. What were they protesting about anyway? Cooperations making too much money and university fee hikes? That's like protesting Porsche charging too much money for their cars because they also want one but can't due to their income. No one's making them go there. Education is not free. |

often a 'harm' component which is small and then a punitive component, which is often larger the irony is that the bad overpaid cop does not have to pay, and I agree with daepp & hugh; you are right, the effing taxpayers get stuck (usually the city general fund; here, the UC equivalent unless they have insurance for idiot cop follies) we have police abuse cases out the wazoo here (yeh, they are unionized) - the problem is that you need cops; and these type of things harm the needed cooperative relations between the citizens and the police |

Not easy to make 120k as a professor at UC, IMHO. I'd say if a basic cop makes 120k on campus, they make more than a basic professor (i.e. asssistant / associate). You have to be a full professor with some years under your belt to even get to 120k.

When I got out of school in 1991, my professor was making about 75k. assuming many are tenured, they must make over 100k by now? Its crazy to think the amount of education they had to go through only to find out a dumb campus cop makes more money with absolutely no college education.

This is not PARF barf.
Maybe the policeman was just out testing his pepper gun and these poor idiots got in the way? I used to do that when I was a kid: "I'm going to walk across the room spinning my arms and if you happen to be in the way it is not my fault."
These people didn't get out of the way. ![]() |

What difference does their cause make? It was a peaceful assembly that they had a right to make.
Oh and Sammy...It seems to me you'd be happier in someplace with a system like China or the former Soviet Union.

None taken . I may not have made myself clear. I think the police response was way out of line.
