Ran down a G8 GT!

...to my surprise!

Took my '78sc out to grab a sandwich at lunch the other day and couldn't avoid being heckled by a guy in a Pontiac G8 GT on my way back.

Considering his car seemingly had an intake and exhaust without cats...not to mention an LS power plant ... I thought I was dead meat so initially ignored him.

After 5 miles of him relentlessly taunting I gave in and did a 3rd to 5th gear pull.

His auto 6 spd was right there on down shift so he got about a car length on me immediately...BUT my little beast didn't give up another inch!!!

My car has 172,2xx miles, a fabspeed exhaust and intake...and that's it!

Is this thing a hard runner or did I just underestimate it?

S

I love it when the detroit boys decide to pick on my little SC. Sure I have had a few walk me but most of the time I come out on top, especially if there are turns involved.

I'd venture to guess that although the G8 has a bunch more power, it also has to carry around a LOT more weight. Give and take.

The fastest times ever officially published for the 1978 911SC was a 0-60 time of 5.5 seconds and the 1/4 in 14.8 @ 94 mph. A 2008 Pontiac G8 GT Automatic does 0-60 in 5.3 seconds, but 13.8 @ 103 in the quarter. Despite its 4100 pound curb weight, the G8 GT pulls just 11.3 pounds for every horsepower, where your 911 lugs 15.3 lbs/hp.

In other words, he wasn't full throttle through the whole pull. Which isn't suprising given that your "3rd to 5th gear pull" would equate to 94 mph in 3rd @ 6300 shift, and pulling to your 110 mph top speed. I'm sure he gave enough to take you initially then let off, hoping not to get caught (let alone racing) at triple digit speeds.

In an official drag strip setting, you'd see nothing but taillights from a G8 GT

LOL, every time I get goosed into a little run with someone in my 993 I get waxed. No need for that any more!

A street racing ticket is never worth it, and especially for a little street "pull". I just let them go ahead. I can imagine some of the threads on a Honda or Hyundai board about how they "smoked a Poorsh" and it was me.

Your 0-60 times for the 1978 911SC are WAAAY off, and in the fast direction. Their 0-60 times were closer to 7 seconds, your 1/4 time sounds about right. I'm going from memory of the 1984 Carrera when it was current, which was 0-60 in 6.2 seconds and it was a lot quicker than the SC, stock-to-stock. The Carrera did the 1/4 in about 14 flat at just over 100 mph.

Someone did not click the stopwatch start button quickly enough in that test. The 0-60 and 1/4 mile times do not match up at all. A stock 930 in 1986 was a 5.5 second 0-60 car, (lightening quick at the time), and it would run away from a stock 911SC and hide. Especially in the first 1/4 mile. When the boost kicked-in in 1st gear, it would be tail light city.

In this article there's a chart of all the 911 acceleration times up to 1978

I'd be curious to see what other road testers got from it at the time. Porsche's published 0-60 times were known to be conservative because they did not do violent launches in testing but they were slower than that test by ~1.5 seconds.

golly gee willikers?

do ya think the BFG R-1's made any difference on mine?

or maybe driver skill?????????????????????

or condition of vehicle?

watched this too many times at too many tracks now. big bad azz 427 cobra/ZO6/camaro/rustangs/etc. varoom varoom in the pits, scream down straight and then in the corners........................suddenly a lil itty bitty rear engined nazi slot car goes whipping by the others as if they were dragging an anchor. and then on the straights varroom varroom and over and over it goes.

in the right hands , with practice, tuned/suspension, a 911 is a deadly weapon. hence the name GIANT KILLERS!

now heres one for ya a few years back at PIR. watched this goofy azz'd pontiac sunbird 4-door with a wing. very basic sleeper, but underneath was some ser-i-ass engine and suspension go whipping down PIR, eating everything in sight! not pretty to look at, but the guy had done some very good track setup and had the experience. and thats ALL IT TOOK! yes a PONTIAC SUNBIRD!

hell we have watched it with sleeper looking old skool race prepped mini coopers and other oddball vehicles, just eat the hell out of anything on the track.

showroom stock prepped..................pffft more FUN FER DER BUCK! and the impression you leave on the unsuspecting..................IS PRECIOUS!

I LOVE SLEEPERS!

Don't kid yourself. Your SC will have trouble keeping up with a nice minivan in a straight line.

My 993 isn't much better. I don't engage in road racing. If I have an itch, I go to a track event. Much better suited for the car and my wallet.

My guess is that you are understating the changes to your 78. Does it still have the EGR air pump? AC? Spare and tools? Stock ride height? Stock 15" tires? Stock timing? ...was he pulling a trailer?

Did the G8 have 4 'average American' (read 300lbs slobs) as passengers?
