Man shoots his own son

This is pretty bizarre and unfortunate. Not a whole lot of info yet but looks like kid was burglarizing is fathers sister's home.

NEW FAIRFIELD, Conn. (WTNH) -- There was tragedy in New Fairfield after a father, who thought he was shooting a burglar, killed his own son.

"This is so upsetting, so many different levels, a time like this, everyone is devastated for so many different reasons," said First Selectman John Hodgel.

Police say 15-year-old Tyler Giuliano was the burglar.

State police say around 1 a.m. a woman called her brother, Tyler's father Jeffrey, to say there was someone breaking into her home.

Jeffrey grabbed his gun, went outside, and saw a man dressed in black with a black ski mask. The suspect lunged, and Jeffrey opened fire, killing him. Later learning that it was his own son.

"They've released the name of the person, of the child. So we now know the father shot his son. That's much to his horror. He had no idea. I'm sure at the time," said Hodgel.

"Which clearly will be the most shocking element to all of this," said News 8's Jamie Muro.

"Absolutely," Hodgel replied. "We have someone coming over to help their neighbor, you find out later on it was your son that was the alleged intruder."

Word spread quickly to Tyler's high school and around town. The only thing stronger than disbelief is sorrow.

"We are going to take care of the families, we locked down the street, we want them to have their time, to go through what they need to through," said Hodgel.

The investigation is ongoing. State Police are stressing that this was an isolated incident and it is not connected to any earlier reported burglaries.

Wasn't quite what I was thinking but very close. Will be interesting when details come out.

So this kid was going to rob his aunt? Sounds like he got what he deserved, though it's still a questionable shoot. Dad should have raised his kid better. I'm sure there is a LOT missing from this story.

I like the headline: 'dressed as burglar.' I think most wear suits and ties.

It never is good if someone is killed.

That said, the guy steals from his own aunt? And worse, he doesn't know when she is out of the house and breaks in when she is home?

I am sure drugs played a big role in this one.

"Dad should have raised his kid better."

Maybe he did all he could and the child was just bad. I have seen this. Don't blame the dad.

But I wonder about shooting anyone outside. How is that protecting one's self?

The article says the kid lunged at the dad. Dad protected himself.

Feel sorry for the dad, but not the kid.

It says "he lunged", not he "lunged at him"

Kid dressed as burglar trying to break into a house. Dad confronts him with a gun. Why doesn't the kid say "dad don't shoot"? Gotta be drug related, because this one just doesn't add up.

When my wife still lived with her parents, she and her sister heard someone on the roof outside their bedroom window late one night. They ran to get their dad, who grabbed his shotgun and ran outside. He confronted the intruder.......that was his teenage son trying to sneak back into the house. Stupid kids.

What a tragedy. The dad now has to deal with it. How do even process that?

That's a sad story.

P.S. GOOD LORD! Who wrote that copy? We're doomed.

It is a big story around here. The local paper has a bit more detail. But, there are still a lot of unanswered questions.

Young intruder shot to death unknowingly by father - NewsTimes

This story reports that the neighbors heard "shots". One neighbor said she "counted nine shots".

The cops will be able to sort that out pretty easily. Even in AZ you're gonna have some splainin' to do if you shoot at one person nine times outside of a house.

Yeah, like why you're such a bad shot.

Down South, we would give this guy the Darwin Award, with Once Removed Cluster.
