Geico

Anyone use them? My wife wants to change insurance and found Geico to be the cheapest with the saving of close to 900 bucks a year over AAA. I like AAA and have been with them for a long time. It's an umbrella policy which cover everything. I am one of those guys that continue to pay for years without asking any questions. Good or bad, any tips?

I also have AAA and am very happy with them. Geico may seem cheaper, but I have heard that they can be a problem when the time comes to file a claim.

That's my biggest concern.

I'm a longtime Geico customer. I'm also married. And my wife drives. So yeah, there have been a few "incidents". :) Claims have always been handled promptly and equitably.

I've had Geico for about 15 years. Exactly the same experience as Moses, very good customer service, no problems on any claim we've ever had, even though some of the incidents were pretty embarrassing to tell them about. No increase in premiums, prompt payment, top-quality shops and materials.

Geico's "bad" reputation is probably because they weed out the bad apples, in order to keep rates low for everyone. People who try to commit fraud, people who have frequent accidents, etc. But we had one year with 3 claims, and they lost money on us that year for sure, and they didn't even raise an eyebrow.

Still, in your case it sounds like you're comparing apples to oranges. Is it $900 less with Geico, for the same umbrella coverage?

Very happy with Geico. Excellent customer service.

I've had GEICO for about five years and I've been happy with them

geico will drop you like a hot rock if they find out that you own a radar detector.

Chocaholic 09-29-2012 11:18 AM

Been with them since 1995. Never a problem and always responsive. And I own a radar detector. Where do people come up with this stuff?

RWebb 09-29-2012 11:45 AM

do they know you have one?

Geico usually ranks pretty poorly in the files of state insurance commissions - contact the one in your state to find the best company - I bet you will find it is USAA (if you are a vet, etc.) and Amica will be up there also

You get what you pay for. They pay for aftermarket parts when you are in auto accident.

Not true. That's on the body shop. My wife's latest incident was taken care of using genuine mfgr's parts.

I told someone the other day that GEICO stood for "Government Employees Ins Co" and they'd never heard that. I guess there was a time when only GE's could buy GEICO. Never insured with them, so I don't know. I do know that Allstate is the worst company ever. There are a few others in that sewer.

I would think an AAA package would be good. @ look171, is your business vehicle on the same policy as your wife's? Or just your S2000 and her car.

jdonovan 09-29-2012 01:56 PM

Jim, Geico quotes are for aftermarket parts. I work at a bodyshop. I would never insure my cars with Geico!

Jim Richards 09-29-2012 02:45 PM

Their adjuster wrote the estimate assuming aftermarket parts. After discussing this with our body shop, we insisted on factory. Gieco caved in.

I've had Geico since 2000, when I bought my first car since the 80s. I've never had a problem, and they're more than amenable to doing claims work the way you want. Last year some knucklehead backed into my Z3 Coupe, damaging the hood and breaking a headlight. Geico told me what shop to go with, but I told them who I wanted to use and they didn't bat an eye even though their adjuster knew the shop was high-end/no nonsense.

Overall, I've had three claims with Geico in the last dozen years and they've handled them well. More impressive when you consider that every single claim, the other parties made fraudulent statements trying to milk them. Maybe it's their attitude towards such shenanigans that earn them their rep.

I dropped Progressive back in May but started looking for new insurance in July. I got quotes from all the big players: All State, AAA, Geico, eSurance and Wawanesa. The best quote I got was Wawanesa, followed by eSurance. Wawanesa has a 3-4 week turn-around time for insuring your vehicle(s). I opted for eSurance temporarily and we will be switching to Wawanesa. They were about $500 less than eSurance per year. Once I have a ticket and a collision drop off my record It should drop a bit more.

If your wife is in the money-saving shopping-around mode, have her check the small agency players as well.

Geico can blow me....

I just changed from Geico after 12 years. I too tend to stick with one company for a while w/o checking other rates. Well after watching one too many Geico tv commercials, I checked other rates and switched to AAA. Saved $700 a year for the same coverage. I was happy with them, only 1 claim.
