My cat ,nailed by a car. No more night stalking!

Hello.
I let my 2 cat's outside at night to...be cats.

My cat got nailed by a car yesterday and came limping home hours after he usually comes back.

Took him right to the vet.
Poor bugger has 2 broken teeth a broken femur and is bruised, i.e tender all over.
I like this cat so spending $987.00 was a non-issue.-somewhat-

I am fortunate that at this very time I can afford it. Otherwise things may have been different.

So no more 'free range' cats and I will be checking out insurance for the cats.
Never thought in a million years I could be swayed to this.

Maybe it's that I'm getting older.

Do you let your cats run outside ?

Two cats, pound rescues, indoor only. I never let them out.

Be sure to watch your cat in the next week. Often they can develop blood clots and go south pretty quickly.

Came home one day to find my sister sitting on the curb crying and holding Puff who just gat tagged by a car.

Strictly indoors for the last 18 years.

Hope your friend makes a speedy and full recovery.

I've had outdoor cats in the past, but I think it's generally a bad idea if you live in a normal suburban environment. Between the occasional loose dog and cars, I wouldn't. What I would think would be most difficult would be converting a cat from an outdoor to an indoor. You just have to be really careful when you open or go through any entrance.

I'm glad the kitty is still around.

Strictly indoor here. And we converted my outlaw's 8 yr old cat to indoor after we adopted her. Of course, she was terrorized for the first 2 years by our resident cat, so that might have quelled any further adventure for her when she took over the house.

I would never want an indoor cat. My cat (RIP - died of old age) was a street smart SOB that I caught as a kitten. He would have hated it inside. He got bitten a few times pretty well, possibly by coyote or racoon. He'd mess with anything, indpeendent of size.

He was a great cat, but he would have maxed out at a $200 vet bill. I always felt that he got a free ride already, compared to the rest of his family (which I also caught but had to bring to the pound - they got killed).

2 cats, both rescue. Both are strictly indoor kitties. Each "escaped" once when young and have never tried again.

Our two rescue cats are indoor-only. That's essential where we are. Let them out, sooner or later the coyotes get them. And you know, they do just fine indoors, even in a house as small as ours. It's said that the average outdoor cat lives 5 years, the average indoor cat lives 15 years. That's good enough for me.

I hope your kitty gets better

I had the coolest Burmese cat that was an indoors cat. My friend/roommate knew the cat was not to be let out and did it anyway, taking it upon himself to be the judge of the situation (the cat was de-clawed as well, which I later learned was a bad deal). Well, the cat didn't come back and I found him dead about 20 feet from the road. I was enraged and my "friend" said to me "I feel no guilt over this." Needless to say, we were never friend's again. We were best friends for many years in the past.

Ours is indoor only. Way too many coyotes and owls around here to let her out.

Our three are indoor/outdoor. Hobbes was killed by a car a few years ago. The others don't go near the busy street, and seldom go into the quiet street either.

"Midnight"... he was our cat for better than 10 years.. always an outdoor cat.. he sometimes would be gone for a day or two.. bring home his trophies .. mice, rabbits..

midnight was a survivor - he really didn't "need " us .. he just tolerated us.. not the best personality - but he was "midnight"..

in his twilight years - he just got sick.. had to put him down.. he was a character..

Two cats. When they're not outside(a lot) they are usually mammas boys.

One was hit by a car a few years ago also.
Chipped hip bone, spot on the head, chunk of ear gone. Only $500 to hear "let him rest".

Thankyou for your replies.

The money situation may not be over. The cat-Siggy- is on Tramadol..morphine type drug along with Antibiotic Aquadrops with syringe for his teeth.
He may have to have his teeth pulled which is another approx. $700.00 with other things .
I really like the cat but I may have to draw the line if this needs be.
Would be difficult on my Son though.

-very difficult to get him to ingest these meds. Uggh.-the cat.

Aside from coons & skunks, we have had a pair of foxes on our street all summer. I found entrails on my lawn one morning from something. A young cat would be a nice dinner.

Sorry to hear of your cat's (and your) ordeal.

I think I have mentioned in other threads our cats have not had access to the "great outdoors" since one of them fell victim to a coyote close to 20 years ago.

I built a cat kennel across the end of the porch, added a riser up to the window and put a cat flap in the window. We can crank open the window to give them access to the kennel, but that's as far as they go.

Best of luck
Les
