Aesthetic/poser question.....number balls
Just curious. What are your thoughts on number balls left on dual purpose track/street cars when operated on the public highways? I mean blank white balls on classic red Ferraris seem appropos as period correct. But what about your track toy that you use at the track as well as cruising back roads on off weekends. Aside from the attention you get from the gendarms? Cheesy?
Joe Bob? Odd Job Uno? Others? Whar say ye?

Guilty.
![]() BTW, the lettering on the balls says, "Rallye de Catalunya." NO such thing for cars. |

If the car is actively being used at the track, why take it off? I think its cool.

I take mine off, but I only go to the track once every blue moon.
I don't think there is anything wrong with leaving numbers on your car, especially if it minimizes paint damage due to on/off operation and time spent. Now what is stupid is a normal car that's never seen a track with big single digit numbers on them. I see that sometimes (Mini Coopers for example). G |

They're stock on the new Moto Guzzi V7 Racer. Which is anything but a racer.

I get to the the track about once a month or every other during the nice weather. I drive to and from the local track (about 60 miles). I had some magnetic number boards it they started getting ratty after a few years. I just put number decals on the glass and leave them on all the time. Not as noticeable as number balls. I guess it depends on how often you drive vs drive on the street.

I used to drive my ITS-spec 944 on the streets quite a bit. Full cage, big numbers.
Now that the exhaust is too loud if I step on the gas, I quit licensing and insuring it, and trailer it to the track. Never bothered me, nor anybody else as far as I know, to drive with flamboyant paint and race numbers |

This. My #1 reason for taking the taped numbers off the side of the car before hitting public roads.

I have autocross numbers on my Miata. SCCA sponsor stickers, the works. I don't get any trouble from the law. I assume it is because they figure I know how to drive. I don't run the cars as much since I broke my arm a couple of years ago, but I still have the stickers on.
I have a few mods I want to do with the car this winter, then I want to run it. Sometimes I see cars with the roundels from things like the California Mille. Nice cars, lightweight Jags and such. I see these adornments as badges of honor, or a nod to the heritage. No matter who you are, or what you do, someone is going to have a negative opinion about what you are doing. I guess peer pressure may count for something, but really, I think people should run what they want, because haters gonna hate. Can't change that. |

In the UK your competition licence at risk if you leave the event in a road car with numbers still in place. It is OK to cross them out with tape. I remove mine carefully, stick but onto the paper they came with, and re-use another time.

The "Rallye de Catalunya" is indeed a road event for rallye cars that has even been part of the WRC Championship. In 1988 it was merged with the Rallye Costa Brava and is now held as the "Rally España RACC Catalunya-Costa Daurada". The name "Rallye de Catalunya" was used in the years 1957-64 and 1973-87. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I think it looks as good on a Porsche as it does on other cars.

My $0.42,
For dual-purpose (track and street), use magnetics. I really don't want to draw any more attention from the poh-poh when driving a Porsche on the street. But while you are at it, you might as well put all those decals that the import guys seem to equate with driving ability and turning a grocery-getting Civic into a bona-fide racecar, like this: ![]() For track only cars -- they don't belong on the street, so the numbers can stay. Edit: Just noticed on that car -- the second decal from the top - TRD - stands for Toyota Racing Development. Car decal fail! -Z

I think it's a question of legitimacy. Do you have corporate stickers because you have a sponsor, or just like stickers? Do you have that Nurburgring sticker because you actually drove the Ring, or because you drove it on PS3?
