Bummed.... I was secretly hoping he would drive with Ferrari for a couple years. I know he is deeply flawed, but I always root for him.

A gallant effort that we all second guessed 3 years ago. We were right. He should have and maybe will follow his brother into DTM. He's got the crashing part mastered.

Well, he had nowhere to go... Hamilton took his seat, Perez took Hamilton's.. Red Bull And Lotus are full. And I don't think De Montezemolo has forgiven him yet. So it was Sauber or a 3rd tier team, at least he has some dignity and chose to go...

i thought he might go to sauber. I'm not sure Force India will have the same drivers next year either.

Was it clear if he was going to see the season out? His comeback has been a disappointment all the way around, I'm sure he is surprised and dissatisfied with his results.

Perez's move has gotten silly season off to a unexpected start, and kind of misshuffled the deck.

Greg, what is there for De Montezemolo to be holding against Schumi?

Cheers Richard

As I recall, When Michael retired he was made Ferrari ambassador for life... he would always be a member of the Ferrari family, etc... Then he un-retires 3y later and goes to the enemy, Mercedes... At the time I recall reading some unflattering comments from Luca... Clearly, while he was more or less classy about it, he was less than happy about that situation...I recall he used words like a michael impostor, not the one we knew... I may remember it stronger than it was worded, no biggie... Doesn't make sense for them to hire him though, he's old now...

While Michael's return to F1 with a German team did write another chapter in one of Ferrari greatest stories. To have one of their greatest stars competing in a Mercedes surly had some sting to it. On the other hand, I don't think Ferrari offered a seat to Michael at the time he was thinking of a comeback.

From Schumi's POV the chance to bring some glory to the home team was too good to not try.

Cheers Richard

Oh, hey, I agree... I was absolutely NOT a fan of MS in his prime, never liked his chopping moves and other stuff he did, but once he retired and was an old guy, I kinda rooted for him to win a few on his comeback ;-) too bad that did not work out, but I think it speaks more of the role of the car than of the driver... I think in a RedBull he's have won several races...

I agree with Greg. I also think he's had his day with F1 & should maybe consider another form of motor-sport - if he still has the fire in his gut.

Cheers

Rarely can an athlete come back after retirement and still compete. More often than not, they simply tarnish their legacy. There's something to be said for going out on top.

I agree mostly, but some athletes have achieved glory enough to keep the legacy shining brightly.

Michael Jordan, maybe Joe Montana come to mind. Schumi definitely, if anyone. Records and legend to spare.

Was under the impression that it was the other way around. Schumi was pushed out from the red cars, not that he left them in the lurch...

Jordan is the best example of success, but there was that silly baseball thing...... Montana did well but was made of glass, every time someone looked at him funny as a Chief he got hurt.

He was basically forced to retire from Ferrari. The ambassador for life title went about as well as the same offer from Mercedes is sitting now.
