Mercedes W210?

You guys have got me going on the Merc wagon hunt. I found a 2001 4matic wagon, high mileage, but it does have an extensive service history. Looks like it was dealer serviced regularly. I was thinking it would make a good 'ski bucket'. $6k, clearly its not going to be pristine.

2001 Mercedes E320 4Matic Wagon, Desert Silver/Java, 2 Owner

What are the potential 'biggies' when it comes to repairs? Were the electronics decent? DIY potential?

I have a friend with a 210 sedan, and he reports zero problems, but the guy drives it like 3k a year, and he drives like a 90 year old woman.

I just picked up a 2000 E320 sedan (same color) with 130,000 one-owner car for about the same price as a new DD. I'm getting 30 mpg on the hwy! Mechanically sound and good reliability. Bugaboos include chronic light bulb failures, window regulators, pixels out in dash lights, instrument cluster bulbs, A/C blower resistor, radio control knob disintegrates, window switches (have to replace all console switches at the same time as they are on a board) cloudy headlights, engine mounts and cat rattles.

Using 3M Headlight sanding kit to remove clouded clear coat - passenger side completed.

Great cars, I had an e300d (turbodiesel) for 4 years. Wonderful ride, and I thought it handled great for such a heavy car.

Parts are relatively inexpensive and they are great to work on. I'd buy another one in an instant, if my wife didn't love her 2003 c320 wagon so much. Actually, that's another car you might consider, if you don't mind a smaller car. Lighter, and quite a bit more fun to drive, but can be tight with kids + gear

with the 210 specifically you really need to look at the front upper spring perches for rot.
Otherwise good cars. Major change is in 1998, otherwise they are all basically the same.

Make sure you test drive one before getting too serious. I was very interested in getting a W211 wagon to use as a DD until I drove one. Very nice car, but it was far too floaty and isolated for my taste. I drove an E500, even with the sport mode I found it to be too soft. Your mileage may vary of course, it just personally wasn't for me. Maybe the W210 is less Cadillac and more BMW? My only recent W210 experience is with an E55, definitely not like an E320.

Dullest, most generic Mercedes-Benz ever made. A German Ford Taurus. Other than that, they're OK.

The E55 is pretty fun.
