So when you move to another state...
Silly question for the day,
My friend just posted to his Face Book "moved to (name of state) ten years ago and haven't regretted it one minute! So glad to be a (state)ian!" Hmmm... he was born and lived in one state for 45 years... and now considers himself a citizen of the state he has chosen to live in. I freely admit I'm picking nits, however I'm bored... Would you consider yourself a citizen of the state you were born in or the state you live in? Carry on!

For me it is the state I live in. I was born in Pa and left nothing up there, I am a Virginian.

Hey, Rick, I was born in VA and now live in PA! However, I've lived in 11 states and 3 countries. I consider myself an American and damn proud of it.

I was born in FL. I was raised in Florida, Japan, Virginia and now I've lived in Texas longer than I've ever lived in any one place. They ask feel like home to me, but probably Virginia the least. I love in Texas, but I'll always be a Florida boy. And I definitely feel like Japan could be called home as well.

I suppose it depends where you are in life. When you're born and raised in one single state, it's easy to call that state your home.
If/when you go away to another state for an expectedly temporary period (such as college/military posting), you often don't consider yourself a citizen of that other state, but refer to whereever you grew up (or just left) as your home state. But if as an adult you make a conscious decision to leave one state for another, it makes sense to refer to your new state as your "home" state.

I grew up 25 miles from where I live now. I went away to college and lived in Georgia for a few years. I always somewhat intended to return to the area, but returned suddenly about 12 years ago. I guess I like it here but I wish I was from somewhere else to have somewhere to "go home to". I'm already there.
My brother moved away and refered to himself as "from NJ" once. I said no you just live there.

Depends on where you go and whether you live in a big city or a small town. In small town AL, I was a "Yankee." What? There aren't any Yankees from CA unless they got here by way of East and north of the MD line.
If I had lived in Birmingham, AL, no one would have said a thing. Atlanta GA, even less asked or said. I use the South as an example because, well, it is the South. Now, if you were born in WY and migrated to MT or UT, I don't think it would amount to anything. Used to be down in OC, CA if you were from New England and wore deck shoes with no socks, you were fooking weird. Now I wear DS with no socks. They don't come much more SoCal than me. |

Came to California in 1963 from Wisconsin. I have always considered myself a Californian. Was a time when I was happy to say that, now . . . not so much. Funny, still a Packer fan, through thick and thin.

I was born in Texas and moved to Iowa when I was 5. Left after HS to go to Texas A&M and stayed in Texas for another 15 years before my job moved me to PA. I would not have moved here on my own. I'll probably always consider myself a Texan.
