Price check on aisle 5...1975 Lancia Stratos

Without googling it, lets have some fun and everyone guess how much this '75 Lancia Stratos is worth these days.

Just for the heck of it, guess what '73 911 Carrera RS's are going for as well.

No cheating....only guesses.

The Lancia:

I'll guess $400K for the Statos and $300K for the 73RS. (assuming they are cherry)

OK I'm guessing that the Stratos goes for $120/130k, and the 73 RS say, $160/75

Anyone else got ideas.

Cheers Richard

I think a Stratos sold in the UK recently for around £200,000.

Almost a bulls-eye on the Stratos, asking $390k.

As for the RS, you're a little behind the times. At least according to an owner I spoke with today. Nice touring RSs are now $500k cars, apparently. Bruce Canepa has a concours restored touring RS, (and a late batch car), in tangerine for $650k.

I don't know how much a Stratos could go for in a live auction like Pebble Beach, etc., but in pristine condition, it wouldn't be inconceivable to see it bid up to $500K or more, IMO. They are iconic and rare.

As for the RS, in an auction situation... with the right buyers... I would say $300K plus. That is just based on my very hazy memory of seeing some of the top amounts listed in Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

Boom. Took me a while to get that post worded halfway decent... just halfway... and your post came in while I was hittin' keys.

It's great to see the Stratos in a solid color. I love the oft-seen Alitalia livery, but like to see it in a solid better. It looks good in a "Petty" blue... as well as in a Navy blue.

You may be right about the RSs...though that seems a little high.

The "Canepa Premium" is no surprise...and probably worth it if you can afford it.

In serious collector circles there is definitely a tendency to buy "the very best available", and that tendency always skews prices at the very top end. In other words a "very nice" RS might well be $500K, while a "nice" RS might only be $225K.

...I thought that TT story ended well and that Canepa was rehabilitated in car circles. Did I miss something?

A Stratos is great if you are 5'-6". Over that good luck.

Could be, I have not looked at this for a while. However, I am NOT giving over half a million to someone with that past.

I think you're on to something here. My friend is someone who opens his checkbook and pays absolute full retail for the best example of a particular car he can find w/o maybe doing a lot of price shopping. Sort of a collector car dealer's wet dream. He has the '58 Speedster that I've posted here as well, it's basically a Pebble Beach resto, matching #s, etc...

There are quite a few buyers like him, I assume. Hedge funders and others with dump trucks full of cash that are diversifying into collectibles and art, that sort of thing. It's a crazy world right now.

I would trade the Cobra for a Stratos replica in a heartbeat. It would be my last heartbeat though as my wife and kids would kill me. They don't appreciate the looks and diminuative stature of the Lancia.

All of the auto auctions at this year's Pebble Beach area fetched $260 million dollars. And they only sold about 58 % of what was offered. The high end market is back in full tilt with money no object. Porsche's were big winners this year.

Yes solid is nice. Not sure about metallic gold though.
