DON'T BUILD YOUR NEST IN MY TRUCK!!

I have a pick-up that sits in the driveway near a couple 100'+ fir trees.

After a big wind storm a couple weeks ago, there were several pine cones under the hood of my truck, in places I never thought they could get to by the wind. Cleaned them out, and forgot about them.

Yesterday, I put new brake pads in the rear. Opened the hood to check the fluid resevoir, and there were dozens and dozens of pine cones stuffed in the passenger side cowl, more pine cones scattered on the intake manifold, more pine cones throughout the underside of the hood.

Squirrels have been chewing pine cones off the fir trees. When they are busy, every 15 seconds or so, another pine cone hits the ground.

Now I know what they're doing with them!

Last night I moved the truck out in front of the house, away from the fir trees.
As of this morning, no pine cones.

Would a sack of mothballs keep squirrels away? Any other ideas?

My grandfather had a 20 year battle with the squirrels in his backyard. I spent many hours laughing at the things he would come up with to try to keep them out of his birdfeeders.

I feed the birds and the squirrels. Birds and squirrels will eat together, but I have never seen two squirrels eat together. There will be a fight before that happens. They both have to eat. I know they, the squirrels, often do damage, but that's because they are hungry and looking for food.

Fought this little rodents for years around the cottage!!!! the best thing I found was to bait a large rat trap (just a giant old school mouse trap) with peanut butter. srcew the trap to a tree. Snap! quick painless done!!! Idid have to get a tetanus shot and three stitches once from this set up!!!! Be carefull they pack a punch! I once killed ELEVEN of then one winter day that way!!

Do you feel that way about a mouse or a rat? What about a scorpion?

Squirrels are OK if they are not destructive and the numbers are keep low enough for the natural food available. Just like deer, overpopulation is the root of the problem and often caused by humans feeding them.

Glen, I know I'm a sap. Wish I wasn't. I've said in Todd's trophy thread I sorta envy you folks that can kill something with no regard to it's life. At the same time I'm glad I can't. I have mice in my shed and have F'ed up my mower. And mice got in the Carrera while it was in the garage covered while it sat crashed, (It's at the shop getting repaired ). Rats? We depend on them for things especially research. There are a billion rats in the US yet I have heard of no one lately catching a disease from one. Now let's talk about greedy humans. The meningitis out break that has killed 24 people to date. I'll go out on a limb and say that has killed more humans that any rat has in the last 20 years. You know they cut corners for profit. The poor fellow that had is cushions wrecked. Sorry it's not worth a life, even a squirrel IMHO.
I'll make corrections to the shed & garage to ward off the little critters.

Scorpion? That's a good one. I guess I would not just stomp on it, (I know you guys have them as my father lived in Ada before he passed). But aren't we supposed to be smarter than these critters? Does being smarter mean just killing?
