About 35 years ago while in Acapulco Mexico for a week I got a mild case of Montezuma's revenge. I can't remember puking since drinking too much wine at a party and that had to be about the same 35 year time frame.
I eat out all the time. On vacation I love trying hole in the wall BBQ restaurants. I don't think I have had FP since I was a kid. I survived many long years as a single dude eating week old leftovers. My great uncle was very cheap. He did not want to run the refrigerator and he would buy a 5 lb package of hamburger and put it on the counter. He would cook it when he got hungry. He had a tin plate that he would just wipe off and turn over after each meal. He did that for many many years. I did get nauseous a few hours after surgery for my hip replacement. I urped a little into a bucket. About 10 minutes later lunch arrived and I ate it with no problem. |
I've been lucky so far and haven't had really bad food poisoning...My dad, on the other hand, got it real bad from a chicken pot pie at Boston Market once. To this day, he says if someone held a gun to his head and said "eat another one", he said he'll help pull the trigger.

No offense to your family, but your uncle was mentally ill. to eat rancid food in order to "save money" is sick. What did he believe in spending on? Ambulance rides? Hookers and blow? |
There are times when there are no substitutes for IV fluids and lots of them. My youngest daughter (then 4) was really dehydrated a couple of flu seasons ago. Basically, she was out on her feet. I brought home the goods and she was a markedly improved kid after a liter of Ringers. Same bug took me down...2L for me and I felt a ton better too. If it comes down to it, there are no comparable re-hydration alternatives (maybe IO but things have generally come off the tracks if an IO is indicated).

I got it a few years ago from chicken pizza. The whole family was over, helping us paint windows. We had a late dinner, probably 7 or 8, pizza delivery and beer. Everything seemed fine, went to bed around 11 or so. I woke up around 1 not feeling too well. Next thing I know I'm doing some kind of dance in the john because it's coming out both ends, and fast. Kept going for an hour or so. I kept wishing it would stop just long enough to get some pepto or gravol down. The worst part of it was the insane cramping in my gut. I've never felt that before - felt like I'd taken a punch from Mike Tyson.
My dad got it a couple years ago from a chicken salad at Disney world. Ended up in hospital. No fun at all. |

When I was 20 or so, I ate some left over salad with ranch dressing from the previous dinner, what could go wrong? I still don't eat ranch yet

Years ago I was in Reno in a restaurant and heard a man order a burger rare. Could not believe it and hope folks are not doing this anymore? All my meat I tend to overcook especially burger. I have had food poisoning a couple of times. Drove from Toronto to my home 40 miles north after food poisoning. Normally took 45 mins. but that time took well over an hour. Hugging the toilet I just wanted to die.

I had dinner at a restaurant in Greenwich CT (some years ago) shortly before getting on the company plane for a trip. I ordered oysters and a steak. As I was eating the oysters, the fifth one went in my mouth and smelled and tasted very bad but I swallowed it and left the last one. Had the steak which was fine.
I was in a panic that I was going to get sick in the plane which would have been a disaster. Five guys in a Falcon 10 with one having diarrhea and upset stomach. Fortunately, my nightmare didn't materialize. Nothing worse that food poisoning. |
