A New Scam...

So this popped up in our email today. Couple of problems with it beginning with we don't have a payroll account, etc. They provided ONE of the last four digits of a checking account (I removed it from this post and put all X's in).

Do people actually fall for this stuff?

We cancelled your payroll on November 13, 2012 at 1218 PM Eastern Time.

Cash will be gone away from the bank account # ending in: XXXX on November 14, 2012.
number to be deduced: $6 753.19
Paychecks will be procrastinated to your personnel' accounts on: November, 14, 2012
Log In to Abort Transaction
Funds are typically left before normal banking hours so please make sure you have enow Money available by 12 a.m. on the date Finances are to be left.

Intuit must complete your payroll by 4 p.m. Pacific time, two banking days before your paycheck date or your establishment would not be paid on time. QuickBooks does not process payrolls on weekends or federal banking holidays. A list of federal banking holidays can be viewed at the Federal Reserve link.

People who are stupid enough to not notice the grammatical, diction, and spelling errors are usually stupid enough to fall for this.

I get close to 100 spams emails per day, but they all go into my spam filter. I scroll through them to see if anything legit got caught in there. Since the spam has exploded in the last six mos., I have found exactly one email that didn't belong in there. I wouldn't even open an email from someone I hadn't heard of.

Yup, there is conjecture that some of them are intentionally poorly written in order to filter the low hanging fruit.

As you said, if they are stupid enough to bite then they are highly likely to be exploitable.

It's all about efficiency, if it's a perfectly written and executed ploy then you will likely attract smarter people that will pick up on it after you've wasted time and energy on them.

Maybe call the local PD and/or Intuit itself, and ask a detective if they're willing to let you use their contact info for a sting.
Then write a response: "Oh my gd, please don't close my account. What do I do to fix this? I'll write to your address. Contact me at _[PD/Intuit]_"

They prosecute kids who copy movies to the ends of the earth.
Why not bank fraud? It's only slightly more important.
Why isn't this Public Enemy #1?
