Diesel Tractor Owners - adding two-stroke oil to fuel

I am interested in hearing if any of you that own diesel tractors add two-stroke oil to your fuel? Namely, my concern comes from the reduced sulfur content and the decreased lubricity of today's fuels. My tractor is a Yanmar F22D that was built is the 80's.

I do use off-road diesel in my tractor which is 500 ppm sulfur (per the sticker on the pump) yet this is considerably less than the sulfur content in diesel fuels when my tractor was built (which I think then it was around 2,000 ppm).

I have heard many pros and cons to adding two-stroke oil to diesel. I would especially be interested in hearing from a tribologist (attention Lubemaster77). The recommended ratio seems to be at a ratio of one ounce of oil to one gallon of fuel). Additionally, others are touting the benefits of adding Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) to one's fuel but the consensus is that ATF is not designed to be burnt in the combustion chamber. The two-stroke oil that was mentioned the most was the TCW-3 spec (which is the ashless).

Does anyone here own a diesel tractor and have actual knowledge about using two-stroke oil to their fuel?

No clue here but I'd like to know also. My tractor is early 90's.

I have an 87 John Deere 955 with the 72" belly mower and frontend loader....3 cylinder 27 HP diesel. It's a great tractor that I use the hell out of.

I have run my own form of biodiesel in it a few years back that consisted of used, but highly filtered automatic transmission fluid mixed 50/50 with diesel and it ran wonderfully. It smoked just a shade now and then but had more power, was definately quieter, and was burning free fuel from all the transmission jobs I did that year.

I have heard of adding the 2 stroke oil right into the fuel tank and I think one of those small chainsaw mixing bottles full into the tank when you fill up would be about the mixing ratio you desire.

There are websites devoted to "oilburners" that outline what they are doing with thier tractors and trucks (some guys with older Dodge and Ford trucks are running up to 80% used motor oil)

I use it in my truck all the time. The engine is a bit quieter and usually get a bit of a fuel mileage increase. Put about 1 ounce per gallon in my case.

I use "Deiselkleen" in my 99 superduty as an addative to every tank. 8 ozs. to 20 gallons, and the truck will start much easier in the Winter, run smoother, quiter, and get better mileage.

I've used the mixture you refer to many times, 1 oz. of TCW-3 to 1 gallon of ULSD fuel. This would be in diesel cars and trucks, but the reasons for doing it are the same. There have been some very controlled, scientific studies done that measure the lubricity of various additives mixed with ULSD, the TCW-3 was near the top of the list and better than a lot of more expensive commercial products, (fuel additives).

The absolute best one was bio-diesel added to ULSD. I'll search for the study online.

Still use what we used years ago. 1 Qt. of cheap ATF for 100 gal. fuel. Don't know about the fancy Mercron/Dextron series IV stuff. We had lotsa diesel engines in trucks and stationary use @ sawmills. Wva. winters are cold and the ATF addition to the fuel became critical. The stuff burns clean, cleans injectors, water dispersing to prevent water accumilation & freeze ups. I use it today on the only diesel in my garage, the "Deere John"

Yep, that's my weapon of choice. Dieselkleen in the tank is sometimes the difference between getting my truck started in the Winter with no help, or having to give a small shot of starter fluid even after cycling the glow plugs several times.

Sorry for hijack but if you put this engine into your tractor you won't need to add oil

Ive always used 2-cycle oil in my diesel. Especially with this new ULSD crap. You need the extra lubricity. Especially with thye newer injector pumps. I also toss in some white Power Service in the winter. I know a lot of diesel guys that swear by Marvel Mystery Oil also.

Interesting concept...............never owned a diesel auto/truck, but swear by my Kubota tractor.

A timely reminder - I need to buy some additive tomorrow morning! Haven't driven my '04 TDI Jetta in many months but took it on an 800-mile business trip the other day. 43.5MPG - not bad for a 300,000 mile vehicle.

I always thought that Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO) was a good product... I have used it for years because it seemed just to make good sense; however, I found the study that speeder mentioned - Lubricity Additive Study Results - Diesel Place : Chevrolet and GMC Diesel Truck Forums and it indicates that using MMO is actually worse than using nothing in diesel fuel??? It ranked in place #17...

ckelly78z,
According to the study above, biodiesel is the best fuel to use in regards to addressing lubricity (place #1).

kaisen,
I have a container of that product in my shed right now and use it with each fill up - place #10. I just wonder if that is enough?

beepbeep,
That tractor is crazy! I could not imagine getting behind the steering wheel of something like that contraption (with its high center of gravity) and driving in that fashion.

The TC-3W Walmart Two-Stroke Oil occupies place #7 in the study.

2 stroke oil or howes or stanadyne injector pump lube. This is a MUST for any engine built before the late 90's.

I just started making Biodiesel from WVO, and I am running it in my Kubota, the Unimogs and my son's 300D. They are all running smoother and quieter. So if you can get some biodiesel, add some to your fuel and it will make a big difference.
