Veterans Day
Wishing a happy and safe Veterans Day, to my fellow Pelicans who have served or are currently serving. Serving this country was one of the greatest honors in my life. Hoping our troops overseas return safely.

On a side note, I was a peacetime reservist. I dont like to lump myself in with those that served in wartime or combat.

I served during peace time in the USAF and I agree with what their slogan suggests, "It's a great way of life". I don't feel I deserve to be thanked for my service.

In my humble opinion, it doesn't matter when you served, you still served and could have been called to give the ultimate sacrifice, not to mention the dangerous activities we all took part in, even during peacetime.

A huge thanks to those that have or are serving. I've spent a significant amount of time working with our men and women in uniform and always came away impressed.
My dad is a Vietnam vet and his birthday is on Veteran's Day, I always found that to be interesting.

Same here. I served with a number who saw combat WWII, Korea, Vietnam and Gulf War I. What storries they shared really made you think. Was on the list for callup twice but my skills were needed stateside backfilling for those called up. #1 Son was on a carrier for Afganistan, then Iraq and then did the sunmi in the Indian Ocean

I was just reflecting on my military career today. When I joined in 1973, WWII had only been 28 years ago. Our battalion Sergeant Major at my first duty station, C Company, 2 Battalion, 504th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 82nd Abn, served in WWII.
I fought in Vietnam (long after people thought we no longer had troops there). By the time I jumped into Grenada as a member of the 1/75th Rangers, in 1983, WWII was becoming a distant memory. We still had a Medal of Honor winner from the Korean War in the battalion. I got off active duty in 1984 and went into the Army Reserves. Was called up for Desert Storm 1 in 1990 and spent 6 months in the desert. By then Vietnam had become ok to talk about. I retired from the Reserves in 2000, but got called up for Desert Storm 2 in 2006. Ended up never leaving the States as they didn't want old guys like me. I miss it terribly.

Thanks all, and the same back at ya. It was a pleasure to serve in the U.S. Navy and Army. I always figured it was a good way to pay back this country for the freedoms we all enjoy. Serving in the military is not for everyone, but the sacrifices made by those who did...and still do, will be etched upon me forever. God bless you all. My heartfelt thanks goes out to all veterans, living and deceased, on this Veterans Day.
