Might I suggest the Rick Lee Pelican tour? Rick can tour the USA, shacking up on our couches and drinking our beer. Seems like the least we could do.......

I'd be an easy first stop on his tour; just a couple hours south of his current location!

My MIL spent the week with us last week. It was spring break for my wife and she was off work. It is amazing how slow MIL is to reach for her wallet when we eat out. She goes for her purse about the time I am figuring up the tip and signing the ticket.

I did spend a few evenings in the garage. ;)

A Serenity Prayer

Lord, Grant me the serenity to
accept the things I cannot change,
Courage, to change the things I can, and
Wisdom to hide the bodies of those people
I had to kill because they really pissed me off.

And Lord also,
Help me to be careful of the toes I step on today,
As they may be connected to the ass that I may
have to kiss tomorrow.

That sucks. My MIL is the opposite. She implements military precision to snatch the check. Effen scary

I bet in 10 years I've paid a dozen times. Half of those times I called and paid ahead of time. Chinese banquet style. It sucks.

I've got a spare room.

Rick Lee 03-26-2014 09:46 AM

I really don't mind paying for them. They brought us a huge suitcase full of food, even three preserved ducks. I just want my personal space and can't bear seeing lights on and doors open all the time. I have band practice tonight, tomorrow, a gig Fri night and more band practice Sunday. So I won't see them much, but will really want to unwind and be left alone when I do.

porsche4life 03-26-2014 09:50 AM

Need to come down to the east valley for a beer and car work night rick?

RonDent 03-26-2014 09:52 AM

Yes, I had to live withthe in-laws for a few weeks when I moved from Sacramento to San Jose

Rick Lee 03-26-2014 10:09 AM

I am actually as busy with life as I ever have been right now. So I can easily avoid them. Just want to be home alone to unwind when I can. FIL was in the kitchen when I got up today. Of all the nerve!

Well, they're three weeks away from departure and it really hasn't been too bad. They've been away every weekend except one and I've been very busy with band practice and gigs and endless practice at home. They're getting a very good dose of classic VH and Rush music around the house and have been to two of my gigs. They cook and clean like maniacs and the backyard looks as manicured as Mr. Miyagi's Banzai garden. I guess they have nothing better to do, since Mrs. Lee and I are at work during the day.

Mrs. Lee changed jobs pretty suddenly, as in she sent one resume out to test the waters, got an interview the next day and an offer the next. So she has no vacation saved up to use for her folks. She took a week off between jobs, but that's been it. I can honestly say the worst part about it is that the MIL always puts dishes and clothes away where I can't find them when I'm looking for them. It's a PITA, but I was expecting way, way worse.

Mrs. Lee gets home a lot later now, so I have lots of time at home with just the in-laws and can barely communicate with them. FIL got to watch me change the oil in the garage yesterday and install a new dishwasher the previous weekend. Mrs. Lee says I should ask him to help me, but it would take so much longer with a bunch of grunting and pointing instead of speaking the same language.

Anyway, I'm not gonna miss them when they go, but it has been a total breeze, compared to what I was expecting. Kind of nice to watch the MIL bust Mrs. Lee's balls a bit and tell her how lucky she is to have a man around the house who fixes things and cooks.

Yea, it is real nice to get support from the MIL telling her daughter she is lucky to have a good husband. :) I am VERY lucky and my MIL is great. I hear stories of the Monster-in-law and mine is a nothing at all like that.

Jim Richards 05-08-2014 04:45 AM

Yep :)

Porsche-O-Phile 05-08-2014 07:20 AM

Glad to hear it sounds like it's working out okay, I'll have to see you guys play on my next pass through AZ!

My wife, newborn son, and I are about to take the plunge.

Saving grace is the house...6200sqft with a salt water pool and Jacuzzi. We'll be living with them but not really with them

Wow, what's their address, I could handle that for awhile.

MIL moved in a little over a year ago. We keep our space. So far so good.

J P Stein 05-08-2014 12:44 PM

Some years back, my wife "retired" cause she didn't want to work no mo, I guess.
Soon there after, my daughter got laid off....the same for my SIL a short time later. They were invited in along with their 2 little ones. I became sole support of all of us'n. Still didn't get no respect.

After about a year, everybody got jobs and they moved out ....cept for the wife, of course.

We're all still friends....even the wife.

Bad stuff happens to good people. We could do it again but now I'm retired and we'd have to make some new rules.

ckelly78z 05-09-2014 06:56 AM

I had what I thought was going to be a future SIL move into our house about 2 years ago. While I did not like the situation at all, I was able to get along with him, perhaps because it was only 1 extra person in the house, not a whole other family. Luckily he proved himself to be the scoundral I originally thought he was and moved out. I don't think I could put up with either set of my wife's, or my parents for more than a week or two.

They had been really nagging me to take them shooting, but were gone every weekend and it'd be logistically impossible to take them to an indoor range on a weeknight. So I started a thread on our local gun bbs about this and, man, did we all make a new friend today. This guy, Bill, replied that he'd taught more Chinese to shoot than the PLA has and offered to meet us all at his gun club today, which happened to be the only day left we could all do it. This guy is whiter than I am, speaks perfect Mandarin, brought his Taiwanese wife and a good 20 guns. We had the whole place to ourselves, so he just set up a different gun on each lane and wouldn't even let me use my own ammo. He taught them everything while I plinked away with my own guns, tuned up a rifle and honed the chops on my main carry gun. Now they're all going to church together tomorrow. I'm sleeping in. Another Chinese friend of his stopped by to say hello and complimented my Sinn U2, said he also has some Sinns. Wow. How did I find such a great new friend?

Also, the MIL was nagging me to take them all to a titty bar last night. I thought she wasn't serious, but she's really been nagging me about it some more today, so I think we might have to do this after we have hot pot tonight. This whole visit hasn't been so bad.

Good for you Rick.

You're in laws have enriched your life and that also has to be a good thing for your relationship with your wife.

I remember your dreading this visit. Isn't it funny how things turned out ;)
