Ice Cream rant (part deux??)

I think it was here that someone else was complaining about ice cream. Something about not calling it ice cream anymore, but calling it a frozen dairy something-or-another.

Well, by rant is that they changed the tub sizes. Same prices, but 25% less ice cream. You don't buy 1/2 gallons any more, they're 1.5 quarts.

Now, I don't buy lots of ice cream, but with Thanksgiving coming up, I figured we'd get some to have on hand. We have company coming and lots of kids will be here.

I saw that crap, and just slammed the door shut. Ugh!

Luckily, I have a local place that sells 1/2 gallons for $5 in about 10 different flavors that are made using the old fashioned churning ice cream freezer like I made as a kid.

well if that pisses you off..never ever melt a tub to see how much ice cream you actually get by weight.

they have some crazy air whipped into the stuff. air is not free..just so you know.

Hmm. Jonesing for an ice cream maker, too. Some review I read had that plastic ball (like in the LL Bean catalog) rated the best of the bunch, actually.

Never heard of Blue Bell (in the LA area).

I have an ice cream maker. Its an olde tyme hand cranker, but it's at the cabin in the woods (no power there). I think that's a great idea.

Yes.
I don't usually eat ice-cream but my Son wanted some.
My freezer is very cold. After hours of close to Nitrogen temps, we had some.
Soft..... as I would be dating Roseanne Barr.

I figured lots of Co2 pumped in along with enzymes from seeweed.
It was like some home-made ice cream I would make.
Never buy again.

How come there are so few mom 'n pop, home made ice cream places here in LA? Are we really that health conscious? C'mon, there are plenty of fatties here, too.

Having lived on Cape Cod, I **loved** having all those great ice cream places around. (Though I think New Englanders eat more ice cream, per capita, than any other region.)

I loved making ice cream years ago, but gave it up pretty much when I found out my cholesterol level. I got really good at making vanilla, strawberry, banana nut, and chocolate. The chocolate was by far my favorite. I used baker's chocolate and had to melt it to just the right temperature & consistency or it would end up like little stringers in the ice cream. Can't remember exactly the recipe, but it involved something like six to eight cups of sugar, a half gallon of half & half, six to ten egg yolks, plus the flavoring. I cooked it up in a large cooking pot & let it cool before putting it in the ice cream maker. By the way, the introduction of air in commercial ice cream is(or was) called "over run." As I understand it, they mix the air in until they have 100% over run - which means they double the volume, and that's probably a premium ice cream. Ice cream is one of my most favorite foods. One time as a kid I did sort of get my fill of it though. An old guy in my neighborhood had an ice cream store where he made all his own. You could buy a pint for a quarter. He offered me the job of cleaning up his shop on Saturdays for fifty cents an hour and all the ice cream I wanted to eat. As time went on I ate less & less ice cream, but after I quit doing that it didn't take long for the desire for it to return. I still have an ice cream maker & maybe I'll try some for Thankgiving.

This has been in my head for a long time. My Ex moved out of LA to Ohio and our 2 sons stayed there every summer.

I asked them what would they bring to SoCal and that was their answer. The shop that they visit out there is a chocolate shop and Ice cream shop. It's set up in an L shape The Boys only work in the short section of the L thats where the Icecream side is and the girls work the candy counter.

What's the big deal with price increases in the form of shrinking amount at the same price? If you are able to read, you can tell you are getting less for your $, just like you have to read the price on a package that stays the same size. Maybe I am not getting this, because there is practically no processed foods bought for my family.

I could live without ice cream - no problem. I don't recall the last time I bought any.

And how many people keep running metrics on the on price:volume of the stuff they buy?

The alternative is a more expensive price for the same size. What's the big deal? It's not like things get cheaper with time.

I have a Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker. Love it. For Thanksgiving, there is just 3 of us so I am making Maple Pumpkin Ice Cream instead of a pie. Technically, I am making Gelato. Only difference is the ratio of egg to cream. It stores better and is creamier.

I would suggest to anyone thinking of getting a ice cream maker and if you already own a Kitchenaid: Get their ice cream bowl for your mixer. Super easy to use.
