My honest assessment of what I'd do? I'd buy a place with some land outside of town, build a nice shop, and start a company buying/restoring/reselling classic and interesting cars. And I'd invest the hell of it into conservative funds and live off of the dividends.

I'd probably do this too. And I would quit my job once I had my replacement hired and up to speed. I don't owe anyone an explanation as to where I'm going or why I'm quitting. I get along great with my boss and would just tell him I'm taking a break from the grind for a while, but am always happy to chat or consult. He lives on the east coast, so we're not gonna bump into each other.

Sure, I'd buy another house. But I would really take my time in doing so and would not shy away from spending money to keep my anonymity and privacy intact. I'd also be setting up a place in Europe and China..... as my monthly allowance allowed. The only personal correspondance I have gotten in the mail in many years are b-day and Xmas cards and letters from an elderly German lady. So I wouldn't even look at my mail. I'd just change all bills to a PO box or have my accountant pay them. No fan mail, no pleas for help, no marriage offers, nothing. I'd never even see the piles that get shredded.

I've seen plenty of shows on lotto winners who totally screwed themselves by flaunting their new wealth. Friends sticking their mortgage statements under their windshields, strangers needing operations, etc. All of it would be non-existant for me, as no one would know me or where to find me. As it is, only friends and family know how to find me now.

onewhippedpuppy 11-28-2012 12:17 PM

And I'd be totally ok with the anonymity. I could care less what others think of me. Cutting ties and moving would be no issue either, I have no relationships short of my wife and kids that are incredibly close, though I would maintain friendships that were unaffected by money. Biggest issue would be with my wife and her 9 siblings, many of which I'm certain would quickly become leeches. Not "helping" them through life would be a problem for her, she's not very good at saying no. Fortunately I am, after an initial sharing I would have no desire to be the family welfare provider. Which of course would probably lead to she and I fighting, and so it goes.

Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) neither of us will have the opportunity to find out. Though if you stop posting tomorrow I'm going to wonder......

I just bought my tix here in western NY. In a hotel so nothing better to do then to walk across the street for a 6 pack & lottery tickets. So if I win I shouldn't tell my Pelican friends?

My ideology is somewhere between RICK LEE, and ONEWHIPPEDPUPPY in that I really don't care what other people think. This is the whole reason I live on my 10 acre farm 10 miles from town and do whatever I want on my property. I would definitely wait to claim the big prize while I contacted my local lawyer and figured out the tax implications along with setting up annuities for family and friends who I deem worthy (and responsible enough) to accept a nice payout that could change their lives for the better.

My own plans would be to buy 100-500 acres somewhere (undisclosed at this time) in the wilderness overlooking a nice river or lake where I could build my log horse ranch with a heated indoor riding arena, big heated shop for my dabbling in vintage road racing, and all the equipment to have my own hay operation to feed my livestock. My true friends and my parents, and in-laws would have visitation rights in the guest-house, but not just anybody would be allowed down the driveway.

I think it would be neat to set up a charity to help single mothers, and other people who honestly try to get ahead, but just can't catch the break they need to excel. It would have to be an anonymous charity that the recipients didn't actually ask for help (NO PLEA LETTERS), but through a network of churches or trusted friends, we could help them with a reliable vehicle, a clean, safe place to live, and medical help at our discretion.

I think I'll pop "Waking Ned Devine" into the Blue-Ray player tonight. Good luck, guys. SmileWavy

Personally I'd enjoy interviewing the folks. No faces to clutter things, behind a curtain, whatever vs. just giving cash to someone else and letting them decide. I would get more pleasure helping as you said CK than the actual $.

Well unless i could buy some really REALLY super hot shallow chick that likes to bone. Hell I'd interview them face to face though :D

As my wife is from China, she has no siblings. I have a relative who would be a leech, but they'd never learn of my windfall and I wouldn't be heartbroken if they did and then got upset. Biggest issue would be keeping my wife's mouth shut. She'd end up spilling the beans when she agrees to be featured on Hoarders or Buried Alive because a lotto payout would just feed her shopping compulsion, and she'd end up needing a warehouse to store all the stuff she'd buy that she'd then never touch again.

Why AZ or WA? They sell them here in MO and many other states. I'll pick you up one this afternoon. Any special numbers?

Hmmm... we could start a Pelican pool - split among all those who post pics of their 5 numbers. Anybody interested?

The state of Georgia (lottery) has just gone live with their site a few days ago, but it has had a few glitches.

GWN7 11-28-2012 11:04 PM

I always thought that you could set up a trust to collect the winnings anonymously in the USA. Or is that state by state tax laws? That way no one would know you won except the lawyer who set up the trust. It would be more fun if no one knew you had the bank.

A buddy up here won 34 million a year ago. He's been gone for a year.

slodave 11-28-2012 11:06 PM

I won, I won!!!

No I didn't. :( Didn't even play. :D

Jim Richards 11-29-2012 02:02 AM

BReif61 11-29-2012 04:29 AM

Well, there WAS one sold in Missouri...

GH85Carrera 11-29-2012 04:53 AM

The math impaired people were THICK at the local gas stations that sell lottery tickets. Fortunately I did not need to go to one of the stores for anything. The parking lots were full and there were lines of people at the stores. I was in traffic on my way to a local grocery store that does NOT sell the tickets. Sitting at the traffic light watching the lines of people at the stores just made me shake my head in amazement.

I see it as a tax on math impaired people. I chose not to participate. Good luck to those that want to donate their money to the dream. I prefer to waste my money on beer :)

johnco 11-29-2012 05:02 AM

some math impaired person in Arizona and another math impaired person in Missouri won 550mil and 5 math impaired people in Louisiana won 2mil each

GH85Carrera 11-29-2012 05:24 AM

But several hundred million tickers were sold to a humdred million losers.
