Did you reset the breaker by turning it off, and then back to the on position?
If you just try to push the breaker to the on position, I dont't think it will work, must be shut off and then back on.

You should be able to call your local Building Permit government office and find out if you need a permit. To me, it seems kind of odd that one is needed.

Actually, it wasn't Tabs. Tabs actually collects spoons, or did. But he was also known for being a collector/former FFL. Someone here mistook his reference to spoons as being a code word for firearm.

Sometimes a breaker can become loose on the panel, resulting in random/continious trips. If you can take the panel faceplate off (ususally just 1 or 2 screws), you should be able to remove and replace the breaker to make sure it's properly seated. I can't imagine that replacing a breaker would require a permit though.

Kim, you do not need a permit to change a breaker AFAIK. If the electrician says you do, find another one who will take care of it. Seriously, it's a fifteen minute job max, a little tougher than changing a lightbulb. He should install a new breaker and test the circuit to make sure there aren't any shorts.

Kim- breakers can get weak over time and won't reset properly. You must know someone who can change it for you? Someone you work with? Their husband or second cousin?

The tools needed to change a breaker are a flashlight and a screwdriver. Go look in the panel and find out who the manufacture of the panel is. Write it down. Identify the breaker that is thrown. What number is on it? 15, 20 or 30? That is the amperage of the breaker. Write that down. And any other numbers you see on the panel. Go to Big Box stores electrical dept. Flash your baby blues ( I assume since your blond you have blue eyes :) ) at whom is working there and ask them for the breaker (info written on paper). Go home and save the bill incase Big Box Person was a idiot and sold you wrong breaker.

Go to ele panel and shut off main breaker (big switch usually at top of panel). Now turn on flashlight. Use screwdriver to remove screws from cover panel. This exposes the breakers. Pull blown breaker out of panel (they usually have to be pulled toward the same side of the panel box they are located on to remove. Unscrew wire attached to breaker and reattach same wire to new breaker. Replace breaker in panel. Screw panel cover back on. Turn back on main breaker. Go reset your clocks and make popcorn.

Do you mean the breaker resets and then pops again.....or.....do you mean it will not even reset?

If you mean it will not reset, make sure to pull the switch all the way over to the OFF side, that resets it, then switch it ON

Hi guys, it was the main breaker that was dying. Everything I read said that if it was the main breaker call an electrician. The electrician said that the original installation of the outdoor panel was put in badly. He had to shut off one of the lines from the electric company. Permits received and work to replace the panel is scheduled for Monday after the the 'main" man comes and puts of the thingy on the panel box. It's expensive but I believe it will be worth it in the end.

Main breaker replacement requires electrican and permit as the power needs to be turned off at the poleand yes it can be expensive. Glad to hear you figured out what was wrong. :)

Wow, here in Ohio we had an electrician replace the whole box and install 200 amp service. We only needed to have the electric company come out to run the new feed line, but no permits were required (or asked about).
