Parent..your thoughts on gender roles?

blue is for boys, pink is for girls?

gender neutral? just wondering what and how you parents roll. this thread is making me wonder.. how do you teach tolerance and open minded-ness?

please please..no PARFiness.. (pipe dream? hahhahaha)

I've read that kids are already born with these preferences and I've found that it really doesn't matter what the parents think, most girls love pink and femininity, innately.

Ever wonder what happens when you shoot the light bulb in an easy bake oven with a squirt gun?

Raise boys as boys. Raise girls to be girls that can also compete in the world with boys. Forget the Princess routine.

My 9 year old girl loves pink and the whole princes routine. And I assure you, she can compete with the boys just fine. As does her mother.

If you have a matched set, one of each, you figure out pretty quick that they come pre-wired for a lot of stuff.

They should make a Star Wars cross-over Easy Bake. Or at least Ninjago.

My kindergarten-aged daughter likes pink. Nothing we've taught or encouraged for her. It's just happened. To wit, last Christmas:

Me: What do you want for Christmas?
Her: I want pink!

Didn't seem to matter what we got her, as long as it was pink.

In contrast, boys just seem to like shooting and blowing things up.

Despite my best efforts my daughter loves pink, dolls, puppies, etc. She can also belch like a sailor, so I'm having a small influence. My wife isn't ultra girly either, she was more into sports than princesses. It's just a natural thing.

My sons have both hated pink and loved cars, boats, airplanes, trains, sports, etc. My two year old doesn't know a lot of words, but here's some that are very distinct - Porsche, car, airplane, boat, dinosaur, gun, tool, work, baseball, basketball, football, K-State, you get the idea.

A great analogy that I read years ago. At two years old the average girl can open a book and hold it with the pages in the correct orientation and will pretend to read. At two years old the average boy can open a book and tear all of the pages out of it.

The old saying in golf, you have to play the ball as it lays, is the best parental advice I can give. The only caveat is that golf has rules, raising children does not.

All parents have expectations and desires, well intentioned characteristics we'd like our children to have. Then they are born and life happens.

I wanted a few basic moral and charter traits for my children. The rest was up to them and for me to husband.

I have no kids and I know nothing about raising them.

My cousin has three kids. 1st was a girl and she was the little girl everyone wants as their child. Very polite, kept her room clean and loved being a girl. She made straight As and was never in trouble.

My cousin figured this kid stuff was easy. Then they had a boy. They were determined to raise him the same way. Then they discovered boys are different. They would not get him a toy gun so he would just pick up a stick and "shoot" everything with that. He loved running around in just his shorts and would come inside just brown from playing outside in the dirt. He would not keep his room clean and was a wild little boy.

My cousins third kid was a boy but he was the nerd-geek non athletic kid that hated sports. All three kids grew us as great kids and they all have kids of their own. All of them went to college.

We have raised and are raising our kids to be good Christians, good citizens, to avoid peer pressure and "keep-up-with-Jones" attitude. Our adult Son has never gotten into legal trouble and our 13 YO daughter is a beautiful young lady, but she can kill with a bow and a handgun. (She can kill, the gun cannot).

We have asked them to do as well as possible in all academic subjects and narrow down their vocation by what they like as long as it keeps them to be good Christians and good citizens.

Our Son is a man and he can be tender.
Our Daughter is a lady and she can be tough.

There it is, exactly.

For us we stressed the tenants of the CC, right up until they were 16, then the Catholic Church requirement was lifted.

They drifted away a bit, then returned at 18/19.

We build foundations as parents, at least in my mind, not a simple task. There is a point when they become adults and have their own free will.

I have no children so I can only speak for myself...

At an early age I was abandoned in the forest and raised by wild chipmunks...

Sure it was a tough life but it taught me how to survive...

That and I can stuff a half pound of pine nuts in my cheeks...

This is so true

My 5yr old twins are boy girl and they indeed beat to their own drum

We did Hailey's room in the princess theme and Cameron's in the "Cars" theme

He is all boy and she is all girl and my wife and I do not believe in pushing them either way

I am a firm believer that everyone needs to find their own direction in life, I will love my kids not matter what path they take

Wait... there is a Matthews forum? Hmmmm.... I have a Z7 Extreme that I hit my head on this morning actually in my hunting room (it hangs from a hook in the ceiling when not in use).
