Think "lifeboat"...you need to pick a lifeboat that's on the lower side of the ship. Those can be lowered into the water while those on the upper side are hung out to dry. It's sad to see what's become of what was once a great company...good luck!

It sounds like you have a mid-grade (easy) position now, in a company with an uncertain future.

Tech is always changing, and the truly satisfied people are in the boardroom or retired in Borneo...

In purely psychological terms: Which would make you happy "later on" in life?
1). Do you want a secure but mediocre position for right now, or an opportunity to learn and mess around with new equipment?
2). Are you hungry?

Don't know where you are at in your game plan... but if you are in the second half... or last quarter...

If like me you are in the last quarter... hard to beat security and not being hassled as you play out the end game.

YMMV

with the same pay and a lower grade, you may be at the top of that grades salary range. don't expect much increases each year as all the others in that grade have to catch up. your co may be different but that's how i see it in the one i'm at.

How relevant are the new skills? Will they take you to the next level?

Could you go back to the other position if things didn't work out?

This is the best reply and advice I've seen here concerning this subject..........and there are people here that I consider very knowledgeable.

His current dept is gonna be outsourced . I've navigated the IT waters in huge corporations for many years before I retired...sometimes it pays to see the "writing on the wall"...jmho.

Stay put, keep looking. Build your skills. It's just a paycheck from the sound of it so time to look at moving on, just not for the offer you have on the table - lower position? Never.

Ok, so my gut feeling is to stay put for now. We have a couple of big projects coming up, which will give me some new skills I could carry forward and use later.

Thanks!

I'm not trying to come across as a "know it all"...just throwing ideas out there for Thom to consider. He's staying with the same corp (which has been grossly mismanaged these past few years) for the same pay. His current dept will not be around much longer based upon what he's posted (i.e. a fraction of it's former size with management on another continent ). THIS is his opportunity to build his skills while doing just as you suggest. Lower position...what is that? I've left positions where I had a fancy title (AVP/Principal)...only thing that mattered to me was the bottom line...how much are you going to compensate me? I know what Thom does...I'm sure he's good at it, but it can be done just as easily from India for a fraction of he makes. YMMV...

Funny you should mention that; the other group is right next to where all of the college interns and the fresh-out-of-college people sit, so to answer your question, yes.

My wife doesn't understand the differences between the two jobs to point me one way or the other.

In either case, I talked to the other manager today and turned it down. He told me if it hits the fan where I'm @ now, he'll see if he can find a lifeboat for me.
