My jobs sucks eggs in the winter.

Not whining, but man. Takes 20 minutes extra just to get the car in the door, ( scrape ice and snow), then I have to de-ice, my floor is soaking wet, I am cold, and then, once i get it up in the air, it is chineese water torture while you attempt to work on it with wet, cold , greasy hands. Then , for the topper, a great big chunk of fender well ice/slush lets loose, and goes down the back of your neck.
How you doing today Rick?

It isn't your job, it's where you do that job.

I wuz pissed this morning when I went outside at 5 am without a jacket and it was only 45 freaking degrees.
Good thing it was clear with no wind or I woulda been really annoyed.
And it's only 'sposed to get up to 62 today. how do they expect us to survive when it's that cold?

My first year at GM as a wrench my stall was next to the detailers wash bay, which was right at the back exit for the shop. All winter long (when cars weren't raining on me) I would get a fine mist of ice crystals over the low wall and all over my bay.

It seemed like I was sick the entire winter that year. I spent half the day yelling "close the f'ing door!" at the shags.

Go to where the weather suits your clothes, (as Jerry Garcia used to say).

Add an enclosed garage extension?
2x4 covered with heavy plastic. Heated fan blower directed at wheel wells. Road sludge drains off while talking to customer. Pull dry(er) vehicle inside comfy workspace.

Or heated power washer?

I hope I have not come across as pissy, I've actually been in a pretty good mood. I'm not a football fan, so the Steelers missing the playoffs is a positive in my book. Now I don't have to hear all the dumb fight songs, and the radio and tv wont be constant football news everyday.
Business is good, but on the slower side, so my stress level is under defcon 2, and I get two long weekends with my family .
My farkin' feet are wet and I'm cold though.
It could be worse, I have a buddy who repairs heavy equipment, and he is probably out somewhere in the field putting a clutch in a Caterpillar in a puddle of mud, and slush.
Carry on .

My new garage is not insulated and has no heat, miss the old place! Nothing like picking up ice cold tools.

Working on cars in the cold part of the country sucks balls. Even in the summer, they are still rusty and filthy underneath. In the winter, it's absolute torture under a car on a lift. I actually prefered working on them outside in the cold, under the car with a work light makes for a toasty little hovel but the slush still doesn't all melt. Indoors, it's nasty.

I complain if a car is even dirty under the hood here.

no kidding. i watched a cat toss a track in 2 feet deep mud. the two techs that tackled the job, i felt horrible for them. they were a mess when they were done. that job doenst look fun in the dry. but add some mud..gross. i seem to remember the track tensioner is spread apart by filling it with grease from a pneumatic grease gun. to take out tension, they had to dump the grease. grease, water, mud..cold. it was awful.

Sounds a little familiar Fred. I grew up on a dairy farm. Snow melt dripped off the cows down your neck as you put the milkers on. It really, really sucked.

When it's cold and nasty outside, I often am grateful that I quit doing remodeling and went back to finish college. When it's 75 and sunny I sometimes second guess that decision.

Don't forget the dried road salt that likes to find it's home in the way back part of your sinuses. Being a wrench is hard enough and this time of year people just don't understand why we are grouchier than usual.

This is exactly why I went into aviation instead of automotive... of course, aircraft can drip some nasty stuff on your head too, and some of it actually burns. Still beats cold, salty water though.

Ahhhh............................those memories. It seemed it was just like yesterday...................................

Funny tho, I had spent the majority of my life in that business. One of the hundreds of things that start to really wear on you as you get older is the weather.

This past Wed when it was cold and snowing like h3ll here in Va. I was looking out of my 7th floor, panoramic-view office window with a hot cup-O-starbucks in my hand and said to myself............................................ ........................man it sure looks rough out there!!!
