Video from tail of MiG29 and Su27 cockpit.
Flying with the "Kubinka Diamond" display team's Su-27, Mig-29 fighter
jets... The following video was filmed with a GoPro HD Hero2 camera installed on the tail of a Mig-29 and inside the cockpit of a Su-27 of the so-called "Kubinka Diamond". The Russian Air Force display team made by four Flankers of the "Russian Knights" and and five Fulcrums of the Both aerobatic teams are based at Kubinka airbase, near Moscow. .............. Comments from a US Navy pilot... ![]() "Notice the constant stick and throttle movements from the inside-the-cockpit shots; good representation of what it takes to fly even poor formation as shown here ! These goddamn Commie Russkies fly a crummy formation..good enough for the USAF Thunder Chickens, but not good enough for the Blues!!" |

I would venture a guess that since different aircraft are used in the formation ,
it is that much more difficult to maintain a close formation. It might be interesting to see 4 F15 Eagles with 5 F14 Tomcats flying close formation

Thanks for the vid.
Navy pilots are probably the best at formation flying. Trying to land on a plane on a moving runway in bad weather really builds the ability to keep a plane steady relative to another object. A cool book to read would be Feet Wet if you guys haven't. Its written by a pilot that started at the beginning of jet carrier aviation, and he takes you through his very eventful career. Early jet aviation didn't have reliability down, and before ejection seats, there were a lot of losses. The Blue Angels has lost twenty eight pilots. They fly a very difficult game, and it can take its toll.

This is some incredible in-cockpit footage of the Angels. Really gives you great perspective of how close these guys get.

Sooooooo we're flying in formation, slinging a camera around, and throwing a few rebel yells. I love it!
