He changed all of racing. No other designer-driver-team owner ever in F1

Thank you teaching us all how to celebrate. RIP to a racer and a gentleman.
(He wasn't the only American to win in F1, but he was the only American to win while driving for an American team with an American car--and in one of the most beautiful racecars of all-time, to boot.)

Like many of us I followed Dan's career in the '60's through Henry Manney and the pages of Road & Track magazine. In 1971 I entered my first Cal Club Regional race in a Formula Ford at Riverside Raceway as a preliminary race to the Can Am event. The $40 entry fee got me, the race car, and four friends into the paddock with the big cars. Probably slept in my driver's suit the night before.
So the day of the big event I'm standing in line to get a Coke at the garage area hamburger stand and the guy in front of me stepped back, right on top of my foot. He turned and apologized profusely. It was Dan. We spoke for a few minutes standing in line. He couldn't have been nicer and he wished me well as we parted ways. We met again 25 years later when I was managing Buttonwillow Raceway and AAR was running the Toyota Indy Car team. Dan came up to watch the testing prior to the Long Beach Grand Prix and ended up in my office for a half hour reminiscing about the early days of sports car racing and how proud he was of the Cal Club for building their own race track. What a great moment. What a lucky guy I was! |

On the TV show AmeriCARna they restored one of Gurney's Indy cars. In the show they talkd about how after Dan had retired from full time driving and was just a team owner they were having a problem with a car and the mechanic and the drivers were saying there was no way to get the speed out of the car. Dan jumped in in his street clothes and promptly did the time they said was impossible. He then gave the mechanics the pointers on what to adjust to get it even faster. The drivers were awed and embarrassed.

We used to seem him at a CandC in Corona del Mar, sometimes on one of his motorcycles and sometimes in the GT his wife bought him for a birthday present. I was always impressed and the woman I bought my 89 Porsche from showed me pictures of him in it and driving it. They had some fun stories. She said he taught her how to drive it.

Wish I'd kept my Dan Gurney for president bumper sticker...

What -- Nobody posted what can certainly be counted as one of Dan's most memorable and important wins?!
![]() The French Grand Prix at Rouen-Les-Essarts where Dan won his first World Championship victory – the only GP win for Porsche as an F1 constructor. Coincidentally I came across this when I was scanning in some old R&T articles today... ![]() I never got to meet him in person (although I did get to see him from across the Paddock once or twice at Lime Rock in the 80's), but he was a great man. The world is definitely a better place for him having been here.
