Shaun are you using a pre-shave?

What do you guys recommend for me? I only shave my neck, but I've been having hell with ingrown hairs using a shick Quattro lately. I travel a lot( starting my 3rd week in a hotel straight) so it's hard to carry a big setup.

What's my best bet for minimal gear, because what I've been doing isn't looking too hot.

That's because multi blade razors shave too close. As the ad's on TV say the first blade pulls the hair out and cuts it and the next one cuts it below skin level. This causes the ingrown hairs. I use a single blade bic disposable.

I'd say the double edge blade. I started using because of ingrown hairs. If you are traveling a lot, it might not be the best. TSA stopped me on my last trip and made me take out the blades. If you drive or have an address you could mail some blades to or check your bags, it would work and get a better shave. I fit a razor, brush, soap container along with all other items in a normal toilet kit sized bag. Instead of the containers shaving soap comes in, I just but the reloads and put them in a plastic container with a screw top that I got at the dollar store. I think they had bath salts in them.

As Bill said, the other blades pull the hair out, gets cut and then slides back under your skin. By just having one very sharp blade the hair gets cut instead of pulled.

Hmmm ok. Ill look and see if I can find a good setup. I drive 99% of the time so no TSA worries, usually check a bag when I do fly

Mike, it's still a great experience, I'll never go back to regular blades. Just tried some feather blades and like them, it is interesting that they are quite different than the Merkur's I've been using. Hard to say which I like better. Like learning how to weld, I wish I had been shaving safety since teen years. it's easier, for me anyway, and so much more comfortable. I also like the purity of the lather, the smell, and less packaging waste.

I don't understand the idea that you cut yourself more with safety razors. I've yet to come close to cutting myself.


Hey Dan, I'm not. Out of the shower, lather, shave, rinse and aftershave. Are you recommending one?

Porsche4life - a question? Not certain if this will help but it might. Rash is caused by multiple passes. Other irritation is caused by going the wrong way. I can only shave my neck with the grain on one pass. Otherwise, it is a mess.

I have good results with semi dull razors. Are you shaving every day?

Number of passes and orientation is VERY much a big key. On my neck I get one with the grain and one across the grain pass. I tried against the grain one time and it was a bloodbath. Took my neck a week to recover.

For blades, I really like the Red Israeli made Personna. I tried the Feather blades, and I felt they were sharp but pretty rough. It gave a couple close shaves, but pulled and irritated my neck after that. YMMV. My second choice is Astra Superior Platinum, after that, the Personna Blue Lab blades. I feel Astra is best value.

I shave while I'm in the shower.


Instead of taking the time to splash water around over the basin, wash the shave foam off afterwards, I just have a super quick shave in the shower.

I'll pick up some feather blades after I've run though the Derby's which came with the Edwin Jagger.

Try the Astra's! Or get a sample pack from Amazon. I really think there are better blades for less money. Pm me your address and I'll send you a pack of Israeli personnas.

I too use a DE razor. Very nice shave. I use a vintage Shick Krona..one of the all time greats.

As far as soap? You haven't used a real shaving soap until you have used this stuff. Best soap. PERIOD. And I've tried them all.

Consider the Poraso Pre Shave Cream in green. I does wonders for assuring a soft beard.

I use a DE89 head on a UFO Kaiser Handle. The Astra's are a great blade but my favorite is a Persona Med Blade. I also use an Alum Block and Witch Hazel as post shave.

The wet shave is actually a luxury, at least IMHO. Adds a bit to the morning routine but I enjoy the result.

don't press so hard.....make sure lots of hot water as well..Dull razors and disposables suck and will tear up your face.

The closest shaves I've ever had were with a straight razor and DE safety razor.

However, both require practice a little skill and TIME to get the job done right. Time is the most important thing in getting a good, perfect shave with either. Here are some tips:

1) Some faces requires up to 5 minutes to properly hydrate before shaving. You'll also want to gently clean your face BEFORE your shave.

2) It takes time to get your soap up to a good lather. Don't skimp. Lather that bar up! Also, don't rush when brushing it on. Get good, full coverage. Let the oils in the soap do their job to further moisturize the face.

3) Shave slowly and take care. This is your face. Shave it like you love it! :)

4) Clean your face really well (but gently) when done, and clean all of your equipment properly too.

5) Apply your any after shave moisturizer and let it dry before going out.

Doing a great shave like this can take 20 minutes or more. So you can see why modern disposable razors are so popular.
